I just saw the SGU residency placements webpage... and to be honest, I'm very envious of the "coolness" of the page. It's so... futuristic!

SGU Residency Postings for 2007 (http://www.sgu.edu/ERD/ResidPost.nsf/BYPGY?OpenView&RestrictToCategory=PGY1&Count=-1)

Ross needs to hire some computer tech guys!!!

Long live Ross...

Yeah... it's a great concept. I really like how you can sort by specialty, by hospital, etc. Not a big deal but the only complaint I have is that it was a little confusing with regards to those who matched into specialties starting in the PGY-2 year. After checking up on some programs that start in the PGY-2 year, I guess they still categorized it as PGY-1.

Was it just me or did they not make a disinction between Prelim and General Surgery?

Doesn't look like there's a distinction between prelim and categorical surgery. That bugs me, too.

What's the difference between the two?

I went to the Ross web site and couldn't find their residency placement list. Anyone have a link? You are right, dindaling, SGU's site is very professional looking.

I don't think it's out yet. Correct me if I am wrong.

actually if you click on the "forward to 2008" it will show you the pgy-2 spots, so if someone is doing, say radiology, it will show the pgy-1 placement (like prelim medicine) and then on the 2008 page the pgy-2 placement in radiology.

guess it goes for the catagorical surg as well, since they would have a PGY2 spot, while the prelim would only have the pgy1 spot.

YES the St George placement site looks nice and it give the names of the individuals. I guess they must require it as a graduation requirement. Ross should do the same thing.
'
Actually when I was looking at Internal Medicine, since that is where my son will be doing residency, I noted some spots on the SGU list that my son had high on his match list but didn't match at the spot but I also noted more matchs on the SGU list that my son had ranked very low on his list. All in all the Internal Medicine placements are very similar at SGU and Ross.

Somehow I had always thought SGU got the uppercrust students and had better matches.

The following was copied from the SGU web site:

In the largest match since 1952, 340 SGU students matched in a wide variety of residency programs. Once again, Internal Medicine was the largest percentage (33%), followed by Pediatrics (11%), with Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology with 9% each, and followed closely by General Surgery (8%), Emergency Medicine (7%) and Anesthesiology (6%). Two students matched in orthopedics (only 616 positions in the country) while five matched in physical medicine and rehabilitation that only has 78 spots nationwide.

I am especially interested in results for the more competitive residencies. I did look on the Ross web site to compare the SGU placements with the Ross placements. From what I see, Ross has not reported their residency matches yet.

Summerwind-

Ross has posted their results for the 2007 match. Check again.

Anyways congrats to the person who got IM at Northwestern University Chicago. I thought that place only took AMGs. One of the top places for IM in Illinois and very competitive for a FMG to land a spot.

Thirteen radiology matches... that's so freakin' awesome.

Ross has actually had their residency list posted for 2-3 weeks now. Here is the link:

What's the difference between the two?

In a nutshell, general surgery is a 5 year residency that results in your specialization as a general surgeon.

Preliminary surgery is a 1 year internship that is often a requirement for other specialties (such as urology) but do not continue after your one (1) year is over. If you have not been accepted to a PGY-2 specialty that requires a preliminary surgery year (i.e. urology) then you have to apply to a general surgery PGY-2 spot somewhere to continue your residency.

That is why the difference between general and prelim surgery is important. Successful completion of General Surgery results in a surgeon, but successful completion of prelim surgery does not guarantee anything.

so... you judge what is a good or bad IM program by what your son decided? very objective. (though note your son didn't match at places that he ranked high, but an sgu student did? hmmm....)

does it make you feel better to knock one school over the other?

cheerleading aside, i think most of the people here realize that the 3, maybe 4 better known schools will in the end give you the same result- good education with the ability to get a decent residency in the US- which school is better for someone is up to the individual.

dont be impressed. its totally disorganized. you can't tell if pgy2 is matched for this year or just someone who is in their 2nd year of residency etc.
