I read in a thread that Dominica has a Golds Gym and a Best Buy. Is this a joke or the truth?

I have not heard of the Gold's Gym so I cannot comment there but the Best Buy in Portsmouth just shares the name of the chain of stores you are thinking of. It carries a little bit of everything including some electronics, fans, food, bathroom items, etc but it is by no means the Best Buy that is located in the states!

Best Buy does exist but it is not the chain in the states. It only has the name in common.

I scanned this thread, and my first thought was, "I'm on the wrong island." Then I read it more carefully...good for a laugh.
Here on St. Maarten, we have a store that has a big red 7 on the front...when I first got here I thought it said 7-eleven, but it actually says, "7-alive."
The Best Buy on the island of Dominica is more or less like a Caribbean version of our KMart or Walmart here. When my kid was there she bought a nice occilating fan there for $80 EC.

haha...that makes me laugh.
No, I have heard nothing of a Gold's Gym. Best Buy is not even up to Wal-Mart standards if you ask me. It's a small little store with a bunch of junk. You can find a few things you may need here and there. Not anything fancy.

Like the other posts stated, its just a small local store...just shares the name.
However, speaking of gyms....when I left the island back at the end of 2005, I heard they were either moving/renovating the gym..... any truth to that?

Unfortunately the person who was selling Ross the land for the new gym kept changing her mind but the person has finally sold it to Ross and they are supposed to break ground any day now. We recieved an e-mail stating they are building a new gym and another building. Yay! Maybe I'll be able to use it before graduating off the island!

How long does construction usually take on the Island? Say they were to start building next month, when do they finish? I guess it also depends on the money flow?
cheers,

Construction takes a long time on this island because they do not have the same advances in building technology as we do in the US. As for the dorms, if they build them anything like RUH, it's beter if they don't. (THis is just my opinion)

I highly doubt the "golds gyn" will be a bonafide golds gym like we see in the USA, built up to normal standards. Its like anything in dominica, crap crap crap---but you pay a lot of $$$$$ for it.
