Hey guys a quick question regarding Anemia of chronic disease, i was taught in school that its MICROCYTIC ANEMIA (which makes sense btw) and goljan says the same.
But in KAPLAN and FA its listed as NORMOCYTIC ANEMIA

any idea what the board considers it???

thanks

from what i remember, i think it can be considered both. if this is the case, i don't think the boards will ask this.

Anemia of CD can start out as microcytic, then later on shows as normocytic.

Goljan actually states the opposite, in the lecture he states that its midly acutely normocytic then goes to microcytic

I agree with MDiva, sorry Goljan

Ok, I looked it up, and I had it backwards, sorry! It generally presents as normocytic. However, in 1/3 of cases it can present as microcytic.

I think Goljan has it right on. Initially it presents as normocytic and then (chronically) becomes microcytic.
