Can you fly directly to Dominica from the US or do you have to fly first to an adjacent island then from there to Dominica? If it is possible to get to Dominica directly, which airline should one use?

no there are no direct flights to dominica. You have to stop on an island and take a connecting flight. The connecting island is usually Puerto Rico. You can take any flight that goes to puerto rico and then take a flight on Liat to dominica. you can also take american airlines to PR and then american eagle to dominica. american airlines has a ross group discount also so call the international reservations number and ask for the ross group discount.
another option is to use various price search websites to find a ticket. some flights will most likely involve taking different carriers and might have more than 1 stop. some even involve staying overnight in PR...that depends on where you leave from as well. there was a thread recently where islandthrift posted some websites for price searches. run a search and you'll find those. good luck

i wouldn't go with different airlines only because you're going to be on this island for a while and not all the stuff that you plan to bring are easily replaceable in case they are lost. austin travels (the agency the school recommends) is good for tickets if you plan to stay a long time (i'm staying all the way until december), but if you plan to only stay for the first semester and go home during the break, then i would advise you to shop around. i would suggest you check orbitz and other such search engines and then buy directly from the lowest listed airline. my experience has shown that american airline is the cheapest for flights - i was able to buy my parents' tickets fo $766 a piece (about $820 after tax) leaving a from LAX.
but yeah, to summarize: try to stick with one airline if possible, shop around unless you plan to stay a whole year then go with austin travels.
