Are there any hospitals in NY that offer housing (free or subsidized)??

Sound Shore MC in New Rochelle, NY offers hospital subsidized housing at 650-800 per month which is right next to the hospital. The hospital is approved for internal medicine and surgery, and it is part of the Sound Shore/Lincoln (peds, ob-gyn)/Danbury (psych) clinical center.

People in my class (finished St. Vincent in 12/05) made a big hub-bub about being placed here due to it being a 3-hospital clinical center, many of whom switched out of the center due to the fear of moving around between the 3 hospitals. But getting a place at the housing at Sound Shore or finding a place in nearby Yonkers at cheaper rates definitely is doable. Also hearing from my colleagues at other hospitals where some of whom don't even get to write their own patient progress notes, I feel I had a great experience at Sound Shore as the teaching from attendings/residents was very good, scut was minimal, had responsibility in seeing patients & writing notes, and we were allowed to do a lot of hands-on stuff with patients. Danbury also was excellent in the same regard, and there's free housing for the psych core (~1 hr commute from sound shore). Though it's only a 20-30 minute commute from Sound Shore, I cannot say the same positive things about Lincoln with my peds and ob/gyn rotations as the hands-on experience at Lincoln is lacking and there is no organized teaching in the OB/Gyn rotation. So if you get placed at this clincal center and do not like that aspect of Lincoln, I would try to switch peds and ob rotations to some other hopsital (e.g. Miami, England, brooklyn hospitals), especially if you are interested in either field.

Bottom line, if you are internal medicine or surgery-oriented in your career choice and you want to avoid overnight calls as much as possible (none in surgery but no post-call, 3 in OB, 1 in peds), then I would highly suggest this center.

since the danbury/SS/lincoln combo is considered a clinical center, will they allow you to switch? so what happened to mount vernon- do you not rotate through there as well?

I know of a friend who's doing their peds core in miami and ob/gyn in england, along with IM/surgery at SSMC and psych in Danbury. however, he was assertive with the school in his desires to do this from when he got his prelim placement so it's important to badger and bother your clinical advisor early and often. Of course, there could very well be a chance where you'd have to take a week to few weeks off so to coincide with hospital start dates for rotations (which my friend luckily didn't have to do) but this is OK if you started in a January class. Not to say that Lincoln is horrible (as ob/gyn rotation doesn't differ much from any other hospital basing it on heresay, and the peds preceptor and the peds cardiologist at lincoln are probably the 2 of the best, if not the best, teaching attendings i've encountered in my 3rd year) but if you want to do more, try switching into another hospital for either one or both of those rotations.

As for Mount Vernon, I heard that they only sent one group of students at the beginning of our 3rd year for IM and surgery there and haven't had students since. I'm not sure if the school will be sending any of our students there anytime soon. I know other caribbean med students from other schools are going through those 2 cores. You can still do electives there though.

St. John in Michigan has housing although i don't know if SGU students are allowed to use it. The DO students do, though.

I will try. Here's one to get you started.

And to get back on topic, miami housing was great, except for the cockroaches, which are endemic in the area (and supposedly linked to the high prevalence of asthma.)

The cockroaches weren't a problem at all. I was just there for my peds core and didn't see one cockroach, and I was in the oldest house on 60th st. The housing manager there is very aggressive in calling the exterminator at the first sign of problem. They are actually in the process of renovating that house.
