Chances of acceptance for May 07/Sept 07?

Hi to everyone on the forum,

I know a Canadian student interested in applying to the PreMed program at MUA. He doesn't have the greatest GPA, but he's taking 2 courses that are 5 credits each this semester in college and is counting on an A in each course. Currently, he already has 1 year of college + 1.5 semesters of university. He's taken Introductory Physics along with university level Calculus. He's also taken 8 OAC courses in English (2), Accounting, Calculus, Algebra, Chemistry, Geography, and Economics. He has 6 years of work experience in the field of finance and has been actively involved in community services on the extra-curricular front. Does this individual stand a chance for admission or will he automatically be rejected?

Im also applying for sept 07, basically this is what is required.

60 course credit hours, which means 2 full years of school (I am not sure if it is only university courses). From the courses you take in the 2 years you can't include any chemistry or any other courses you are taught in MUA premed. I took chemistry in my first year at university so I have to take summer school and make up for it. As for applying to MUA you need a minimum of 45 of the 60 credit hours completed in order for them to look at your application, that means 15 half credits or 7.5 full credits.

So if I were you I would call and see if they accept college courses, and I know that OAC courses wont count since they are highschool equivalent.


I know for premed they dont look at extracurricular much. They allow alot of students into premed because if you dont maintain a certain avg you dont make it into med.

Thanks for the reply! I too found out that they don't accept OAC's because it's still considered High School. These are the following requirements for the PreMed program at MUA:

* Two years of college level coursework (60 semester hours) from an accredited college or university.
* Two letters of recommendation.
* Completed Application Form.

I know that Canadian medical schools don't approve of any courses taken in college, but the United States does allow you to apply with 2 years of college and 1-2 years of university. It is my assumption that the Caribbean medical schools work the same way. And yes, my friend already has 46 semester hours in total, so he should be able to apply.

i wanna apply for the sept 07 for pre med. im expecting my bachelors the end of this semester but i dont have that great of a gpa, right now i have a 2.5. do u think i have a shot in getting into the program with this gpa?

aslong as you can explain yourself im pretty sure you will have a shot. Premed is just another way for MUA to make money and the 3.0 cutoff to get into basic sciences is their weeding process.

I think that's pretty much it. If you meet the 60 semester hour requirement along with a gpa of 50% or more, you stand a chance. Think of it this way, there's no harm in applying.
