Has anyone at AUC used a webcam on campus before? I am a 1st year student and have tried everything I know how to to avail. I have a family back home, so it would be really great if I could get this working. No internet in the dorms yet. There has to be someone who has tried this before me.

Yeah, people use webcam. The quality depends on the service you're using (don't use IDL), and the connection you're getting.
i used MSN messenger along with a webcam with the school's internet. it was very choppy due to the limited speed at school.

And they let you onto campus without your pants on?
My friend used his with caribserve with minimal difficulties btw.

I knew they had security for a reason; to keep students from participating in adult internet activities at school. Perhaps that is the reason the internet is so slow.

What's the trick to getting it to work? Something having to do with the wireless networks here is blocking me - I keep getting a message saying I cannot connect because I am behind a firewall, even if all my firewall/virus software is disabled.

For student Route 5, we go through the proxy settings, which allows us to access internet as well as the N drive on campus. They also have a router that does not go through the proxy; for example cafeteria, where you have to disable the proxy settings (if you were logged into proxy server) to access the internet. I hear that skinny computer guy will disable certain programs (that is who we blame it on when the internet won't run AIM during high traffic time) if they are using up too much band width. Anyway, I hope that helps in the search. I have done it with caribserve as well, as long as the neighbors are not clogging up the bandwidth downloading whatever neighbors download.

I'm also a first semester...the internet in the dorms is so worthless that skype wont even work...vonage? Don't even think about it. My guess is that you'd have even worse results with a webcam. Best bet--take advantage of the internet on campus after everyone (or most everyone) has left (~7 or 8pm). I can't wait to get off campus and get caribserv.

Since I'm not there, I don't know how to solve the speed problem, but I'd give skype a try if you're having firewall issues. Skype usually doesn't have problems gettting through firewalls.

I didn't live on campus, but I used a webcam sometimes to talk with my family back home. I used it through the msn messenger and it worked fine. You may have to get a headset depending on your computer in order to hear the audio.
