thanks, I got another question. What is the exact requirements for the uniform? Do the polos have to be SMU polos or will any white polos do?
amj0327
01-29-2007, 08:17 AM
I believe we can wear any white polo shirts. By the way-I'm not postive about the textbooks, It's just want I've been told by many students. Some still buy books for reference. It depends if you get more out reading textbooks or from lectures.

Yeah, you're right in your next post. It is med school. You will have to do some supplementary reading out of textbooks to learn what you need to know, and for further clarification. You can "get by" and pass at SMU without textbooks, but you need them to really cement the info in order to do well on the big daddy of all exams, Step 1. Med school will make you a bibliophile.

02-03-2007, 03:21 PM
Text books are a must. True you may get by and pass class exams (only just!) on the class lectures soley, but from experience at SMU, its always good to broaden and supplement wat u learn in class with wat u read on your own outside class.
And as long as your white tee/polo has a collar, and is WHITE, then you need not worry.

I'm in for may too, FL. but haven't hear about the uniform yet, where did you get this info?
ATLmd
02-19-2007, 10:05 AM
For uniform.. you guys have to wear polos and khaki.. if you want you can wear stuff over the shirts like other shirts but they will make sure you have the white shirt or they charge you in the beginning and eventually tell you to go back and change. You don't need all the books... if you have money then get them all but I would tell you guys to get the BRS for every every class and all the stuff for anatomy. Other than that you will realize that you don't have time to go through references to learn more and more because you are limited on time and a crap load of information is given to you on a daily basis. Also, the internet will be your best friend because thats the fastest way you can look up things. Teachers here will test you on what they teach you or tell you. The ppt. they give you have more than enough info and all the teachers will tell you what to do. Getting books would be cheaper if you get them from students. About the class sizes... They usually accept atleast 100+ from what I have seen because a lot will not make it through and/or leave. The school is great.. and good luck, I am here now
I am in for the Sept class, but so far i feel like there is only a handful of us..
But I realize that the Caymans are going to be crawling with NYCers..Hehe, clinicals are going to be tight in a few years .

So whenever we are on campus we will haveto wear white polo and khakis? Can it be a white button down shirt instead? Is the dress code strictly enforced, like whenever we are on campus that is how we have to be dressed? We can never be in sweats or in jeans etc.? What do we wear in anatomy lab? Not that I have a problem with looking sharp, I have heard that it gets mad hot down there in the Carrib, islands. Is the Cayman Isl. the sam e?

SMU is a good choice. Tough courses, a lot of material so you have to stay on top of it from day one. Most students live near the school mostly in west bay which is anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes from school. Treasure Island is a popular spot. Huge complex of apartments pool and lot of students around. It's between the school and res hall. Close to school, shopping, restuarants and its on the main strip.

using your cell phone on the island is not a good idea even if you have the best plans because the cayman roaming charges will kill you bad..when I went I knew this and kept the calls at a min but it still was not enough to keep down the bills of 300 400 from the cell to calls I made in my office
to the school and govt offices,,,I even bought a calling card one day from digicell and the 15 mins went fast, I called from digicell in westbay where they have phones you can call home Just get a sim card but that will be only good for gsm phones like cingular or sprint not verizon since they are on the cdma networks and do not have sim cards
You also need a quad band phone that works on 4 diff freqs because a country can use at any one time 2-3 diff bands to operate on.

Are you kidding $300?
I spoke to a student who's currently on the island and he used his veriozon phone and kept the same # with vonage.
He paid a fee of $29.95 for unlimited calls and says its free to transfer the number.

BUT the people you want to speak to will also have vonage
and vonage to vonage is free plus 40 cents/min is better than 2.00 usd/min right?
also incoming calls are free I think w digicell if you were to get your sim card on the island

Let me explain the phone thing:
1. you buy here for less than 30$ a prepaid cell phone to be reached by anyone( free incoming calls) and make few phone calls on island
2. you bring a vonage or you buy a internet phone here from Cable and Wireless and that is what you use to call the US, Canada, Europe etc..
Email me if you need more information,
See you soon in Cayman,

So for a prepaid cell, all incoming calls are free, even from people from the US? With a prepaid cell, can you call to US.
For vonage, can you use that to call on the island or is it just for calls to US only?

How would I ship my stuff that I couldn't bring on the plane?

WOW.. if you are going in May.. you might be a little behind on some of these topics..
What are you wanting to ship? Banks are there, the school will tell you where to go and give you letters showing you are a student.
Your ATM will probably charge you.. mine did.. 75cent per transaction.

I'll be there in May 2007. I'm from TX.
I'm coming from Texas too. I'll be in the vet school though (a skip away from the med school).
There are phones available for 30 $ ?
Also, where can one get wireless or internet phones?
Are they sold on the island?

About shipping, I want to ship items that I can't fit in 2 luggage bags, such as non-perishable food items, school materials, etc.
What company did you use for shipping?
drjohnwebb
04-18-2007, 06:10 PM
Food items and anything that is new...might get taxed.. It is easier to buy most of that stuff on island. You aren't going to starve.. I don't think there is any reason to ship food there. The cost of shipping and especially the hassle, it is cheaper to buy it there. What items won't fit in luggage? It is probably easier to see what your airline would charge for an extra bag and bring it with you. I am not bringing a printer. Most say you can live without it and you can always get one super cheap at the end of the semester, when people are leaving. I was going to bring sheets, etc.. I am just going to buy them from Priced Right, there were reasonable enough there. I would rather bring clothes and buy that stuff there.

You can use DHL if it's just 1 or 2 boxes (ask about their 55lb. flat rate) or if it is 5-10 boxes then I would recommend using a shipping company like Seaboard Marine. Also, there is a direct ship program through the SMU bookstore - St. Matthews University Virtual Bookstore (http://www.universitybooksonline.com/stmatthews/)

I am thinking of having a get together at my house that Saturday night (5th). I will try to find a 3rd or 4th semester student (or a few) and see if they can come over and answer any questions anyone has.
I will post next week with details.

Hey guys,
I am also coming down may 5th. I was wondering if you guys bought "all" books for class. I know books are recommended and required but sometimes professors go on their lec notes most of the time. I was just wondering if you guys heard anything specific about any classes. I got everything except the books for the patient skills class. anyways thanks.

No labcoat and scrubs needed. A lot of new students are disappointed about that, but there will be plenty of time, the rest of your life, to wear the white coat and scrubs.

I am here.. in my house and just got my internet up...
By the way.. if you are bringing new stuff, computer, etc... take all that stuff out of the boxes. One... it's saves room, two.. customs here checked my stuff.. Lukily I was out of room and my bags where over weight.. so I dumped all the boxes.
Also.. On US Air.. I would assume all airlines.. bag limit is 50lbs,.. if it is over 50, yet under 70.. it is one rate.. if it is over 70, but under 99.. it is another.. NO bag over 99lbs.. I had 60, 73 and 116... I had to take stuff out of the 116... I had three bags (extra bag fee is $80) and I had to pay another $50 for each overweight bag (2)(99 & 73Lbs) and $30 for the 60lbs.. so $210 extra. Still cheaper than shipping.
If you are coming this week or already here.. pm me..
Good luck

Poor poor suckers
This is the start of a long two years.
Just remember that SMU stands for
Self Motivation University and you will be fine.
Stay away from the drama and keep your circle small.
First semester is not where you go out and party
its where you learn the correct way to study and manage your time.
Good luck to you guys

Good luck to everyone arrived on the island! This is the start of a long, tough but hopefully fulfilling journey for you. :) I can't believe it was so long ago that I was first entering med school the same way... before you know it you will be applying for the Match in three years, so work hard, stay focused and help out your fellow students.
Keep your eyes on the Prize... and never get distracted or discouraged. In the end its worth it.
