I have been accepted to Jan 07 term and can't wait to start med school. With that in mind I have a couple of questions. I have heard rumors that in my case (being a 1st termer in Jan 07) I will graduate from SGU along with the entering class of Aug. 07 and not Aug. 06. Is this true or just an empty claim? Would it be possible to graduate with the entering class of Aug. 06?
Also, I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me a rough timeline (important dates, such as: when should I take the USMLE, apply for clinicals and residency programs, etc.) for the entire 4 years of med school at SGU? I am asking this because I am guessing that I will not be ready to take Step 1 along with entering Aug. 06 class, which screws up the rest of my timeline. As a result, I might not be able to apply for residency programs on time and would have to wait until the following year.
Finally, I have been awarded the Geoffrey Bourne Scholarship. Is this a recurring scholarship, i.e., will I be receiving this scholarship for the rest of my years at SGU? Thanks a lot for your time.

yes you will be graduating with the 8/07 class and NOT the 8/06 class. this means that youwill have more time to study for step 1 and step 2 and also have more time to apply for residency and going on interviews.
this will be the typical schdule for you
1st term-1/07-5/07
2 term- 8/07-12/07
3rd/4th term- 1/08-6/08
5/6th term- 8/08-12/08
study for step 1 1/09-3/09 depending on your own schedule
should take step 1 by end of march
~5/09 start clinicals, which will last 2 years which will take you to 5/11 and you will be eligible for the 2011 match assuming you passed everythin
now the august, 2006 class will graduate on 5/2010 , so it is really impossible for you to graduate with that class and go into 2010 match

The amount awarded to you in the Geoffrey Bourne Scholarship is over four years. So, for example, let's say you were awarded $4,000 then you will get about a $500 credit on your bursar statement each semester.
As far as being able to fast track things and graduating with the August '06 class, I don't think it's possible. But I think most people that start in January are pretty glad that they end up getting like a 3 month window to study for the USMLE compared to those that start in August only getting a few weeks. Also, if something happens and you need to decel or take a leave of absence you'll still graduate at the same time as opposed to getting knocked back a whole year.

forgot to add that you need to have taken step 2 both CS and CK before applying for resdency. typically you need take step 2 at the end of 3rd year or when you have completed the core rotations

since you start in 07, you are part of the 07 entering class, not the 06 entering class- thus you graduate in '11. Someone asked a while back if it eas possible to finish in 3 years(which is essentially what you are asking) and while mathmatically possible, realistically not really- i wrote a timeline in a previous thread- do a search(i'm just too lazy at this point to do it myself), but in short- you wouldn't be able to take any time off during 3rd and 4th year, wold have to do all your rotations in the UK and would have to do rotations all the way up to graduation- not really worth it IMHO.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I really appreciate it. To answer uwrtank's question I submitted my scholarship application during the end of the second week of November (don't remember the exact date). I found out about the scholarship awarded to me over the past weekend on Net Partner.
To further comment on GonnaBaMD7's remarks I have been awarded a total of $4000 for year 07 ($2000 per semester according to the info on Net Partner). So, I don't think that the $4000 award applies for the entire 4 years. That's why I was curious whether the scholarship is renewed each year.
Again, everyone, thanks for the help.

If that is the case, I would guess that your total award was $16,000. I'm obviously not an authority on the subject and I would advise making a call to your financial aid counselor to find out for sure.
