Hello folks,
INTERNET QUESTION:
Is there a registration process for getting one's computer up and running for internet usage once we arrive or can we connect automatically once in the dorms? ( I'm in TrueBlue)
I believe there's wireless in the dorms now (Correct me if I'm wrong).
Does that mean there's not ethernet connection anymore?
The Welcome to SGU booklet talks about setting up internet with C&W. Is that the only way of setting up an account or can we also do it through the school? Is it free through the school?
MOBILE QUESTION:
The Welcome to SGU booklet only talks about setting up mobile service with C&W but I think I've seen elsewhere that Digicel and bmobile are also in GND. Is that so?
Do these companies come to orientation for students to set up accounts or do we go to their offices to do so?
Thanks for the help.

both wireless and ethernet jack works in few dorms, but not in all. but most dorms, hopefully should have wireless soon. as a first termers you will be placed in one of the SDs most likely and those will have internet. but bring a ethernet cable anyway.
i think starting from jan, you will have to sign in to use the sgu network and i think the login is the same as your "my sgu" account. however i am not sure as this is a new process and hasnt come into play yet. but there is a program that you have to dl and run and make sure your laptop has all the current virus updates and all before sgu will give you access to its network.
bmobile=cable wireless btw. you can choose whatever you want and it doesnt really matter. during orientation week there will be booths set up from both of them as well as other vendors for varios stuff that you can go spend your USD/EC on

Check the sticky marked "Welcome to Grenada, a Student's Guide for Students (http://www.valuemd.com/st-georges-university-school-medicine/126168-welcome-grenada-students-guide-students.html)" There's a phone section that might help with your questions.

The connection in the superdorm rooms is wired, not wireless. In the SD study lounges they do have wireless. To gain access to the network you will have to pass a security test where they make sure you have an adequate and updated anti-virus program and if not you'll have to download one (AVG). Forget about C&W now that most of the dorms are connected.
As for your phone, Digicel and B-Mobile are the two companies. They are both on campus during orientation week and have some pretty decent deals for students during that week. If you can get your phone from home unlocked you can just buy a new SIM card in Grenada and save yourself some money and have a much nicer phone than whatever they are offering to sell you. I think most people (including myself) use Digicel but I don't know the differences between the two companies.

lol. thanks for the suggestion "rumors". I've had the "welcome to grenada" since you posted the first draft on your blog and I've been reading your blogs religiously for a while, so i'm well aware of the resources you provide.
I just wanted to figure out if I needed to go to the companies myself or if they come to us. basically.
Your blog has been really helpful in painting a vivid picture of life at SGU. I'm grateful that you provided that forum for us newcomers...
Best to you in your clinical years,

They will come to you on campus during orientation. They will sell phones at a student discount of up to 50% (so a basic Nokia costs around $40). If you buy your phone earlier at the store in Grand Anse, you won't get the discount... Just FYI...

...and buy lots of minutes/credit when they promote the "double your minutes" specials. (100EC purchase = 200EC of talk time)
These promotions are usually at the beginning and end of the term.
Credit balance is good for a year now. Be smart and buy when it's cheap.

YES! And you'll probably go through more than you'd think. I took advantage of two 2 for 1 deals and bought two 70EC credits which became two 140EC credits so I had 280EC total. I actually ended up running out by the end of the term and I don't talk on the phone that much and I have Skype to talk to people back home.
