I know this is quite early but has anyone talked with folks on Nevis about housing? I know as first semester students we have to live in one of the dorms, but I wonder if there are really any options available to us...

Look on the MUA forum for answers to this questions, if you haven't already..

You actually DON'T have to live in the dorms- something I found out once I already paid for my dorm room. Some people find other places to live before hand.
On that note- I have a room for rent, as well as all the pre-med textbooks for sale!

Hey Happy Squid -
Did you find another place to live on Nevis or did you stay in the dorm? I really don't want to live in a dorm but it sounds like we have to?! Did you finish the pre-med program? How was it? Any suggestions? I'll be there in May for pre-med 1 and any advice would be cool... thanks!

Do I just need to provide proof of another place to live?

You don't have to stay in the dorms. You can find a list of housing available at the SGA website. It should be up to date now that we have someone in charge of the website. If you are a female and have to stay at the dorms be careful with the dorm manager. If you can make it through pre-med you will be fine the rest of the way. Some of the professors who teach pre-med are also the ones that teach the medical students so you get to see similar questions in exams twice which makes it pretty easy. You don't have to provide proof that you have another place to live, just don't make a reservation at the dorms. Once you turn in the dorm info that they ask for they will make a reservation for you. I guess you can call or e-mail them and tell them to not reserve you a dorm room. The advantage of being at the dorm is that a van from the school goes all the way out there to pick everyone up.

When I first started, it was a must to stay in the dorms, but I gues things are getting better....

He's just an ***

From what I've heard, a bit of a creepo and a touch of perv. This guy is a hustler, so be careful. If you got a double room, pay for only 1 internet connection (he'll keep the other 80 bucks for himself). If your roomate is leaving for good, he might try to get you to pay the rest of the money for a single room. DON'T!!

thanks stookie, it's a good tip. i'm coming in sept so the housing issue is a bit scary. do i call nevis or the dorm manger to arrange my rent? are you suppose to pay for the dorm rent right away or when you get there?...i dont know if you can answer this, but is it possible to secure off-campus housing for sept. without having been to the island yet?

Like stookie said, he is a creep and a perv. If you want to stay at the dorms all you do is send in that questionaire you received in the package, e-mail your arrival information and you are set. There is no need to call anyone. You pay your rent when you get to the island. Housing outside of the dorms is an arrangement between you and the landlord, you would have to call the landlord him/herself and make arrangements. I would not advise you to do that though, it would be better to go and take a look at the place before you make any commitments. Some of the places being rented at Nevis are very bad, don't have air conditioning, are in a bad neighborhood (drugs), too far from the school, charge too much etc. If you are not coming to the island early enough to look around you might aswell stay at the dorms, at least for the first semester.

I would advise you to stay at the dorm for your first semester. The dorm manager may be a creep, but he won't do any thing to you. If the dorm is filled, the school will place you into a house with other students, most likely in brick kiln, or near Rawlins.
