too quiet over here. sgu & ross have very active boards, but Saba's seems to have died down. there used to be some really great discussions around these parts. amyames, sundevil, rdecastro, nate (he seems to be back, thank god!).

what's happening over there? working you guys to death? no time to feed us soon-to-be Saba med students a few crumbs about your daily lives? even the new moderator appears to be as missing-in-action as the last one -- good old ResearchingGuy.

come on, Sabanites. take a second or two out of your busy day to remember what it was like before you starting studying & partying all day/night long.

anything. please!

Come on Breezee. i see you lurking. you're in clinicals now, right? how 'bout throwing us a bone about your day today on the wards? good day? bad day? maybe just the same ol' routine of saving lives and stamping out diseases? probably gets old afterwhile, but it'd be great to hear a story or two.

Yea, I was a little MIA there for a while, but this semester seems to be going a bit smoother, so I can once again not study and focus on valuemd. My roommate has gotten himself a lady friend, so that leave me with alot of free time to goof of on here as well. That, and he was one of my main partners in crime, so i haven't put myself in any situations that have warranted funny stories lately. I have lost 15 pounds since the start of the semester. Motorcycle accident + roommate that loves bacon + own love of ice cream = fat ****. I was knocking on 200 pounds over break with mom's home cooking. That and the constant ridicule from my brothers made me get back into the gym. Now that I have this bronze statuesque body, I can once again throw it around and hurt myself..... which results in funny stories. I took MADMD on a hike up the hill called "the whale" above the bottom last week. It's 45 minutes up and 20 down in healthy Nate time, but going on 2 1/2 hours later in total darkness and rain I rolled into the Bottom with a fairly pissed off hiker. How was I supposed to know she was scared of rock climbing and that my knee still wasn't 100%. I happened to leave that part out in the brief explanation of what we were going to do after school. Several times she stated that she was going to either a) die, b) kill me, or c) kill me and then die....

In other goings on.... Open mic night was last week, not alot showed, but it was a very enthusiastic crowd. We even got 6 first sems up there and one even played, so I'm pretty happy about that. We lost our blues frontman to a couple days of heavy rain and cancelled winair flights though.

I'll try and stir up some fun. Maybe I'll throw a land crab in my roommates bus tonight and watch the hilarity ensue on the ride to school.

For lunch? Ha, probably unglovified hand-flavored tuna sandwiches. They're actually quite good...must be the hand juice.

germany
10-25-2006, 12:48 AM
ok, here's what i'm imagining: fresh grilled ahi tuna (from the early morning local's catch), a little mayo, dill, pickle relish, hand tossed and spread on a fresh-baked slightly toasted roll. ready for purchase as soon as anatomy let out for the morning? side of chips and cole slaw?

close, or no?

yah been MIA as well. didn't think second semester would kick my ***, but it has. I need to give my Guyton textbook a good beatdown....was thinking of throwing it down the hill and letting someone run over it..oh yah, I'll show Guyton whose the boss around here!

as for the second semester slacker schedule it goes something like this....

6:00am: alarm goes off...listen to see if roomie already awake. if no, fall back asleep because I know said roomie will eventually wake me up...notice the eventually....

6:30am: glance at the clock, and freak out. how am I going to take a shower, get ready, eat a healthy well-balanced breakfast, and make a lunch that won't make even fatter? realize no matter what I do I will never be able to eat healthy on Saba, so fall back asleep.

7:05am: wake up again, and really freak out! knock on roomie's door (wasn't she supposed to be waking me up?) and feel satisified when she mumbles something incoherent. okay, good. at least she's still alive.

7:40am: outside with roomie trying to hitch a ride. not freaking out because I know our bus driver will show up...eventually :)

8:00am-10am: medical psychology. if watching video that day, then ~15-50mins of nap time.

10:15-12:15: medical biochemistry. spend my time watching my classmates loose multiple games of solitare. can't watch people play chuzzle...that game is too addictive to even watch!

12:15-12:45: cram in some sort of lunch....if bringing lunch, then running to be the first one at the microwave....if not first to the mircowave, then forget it...lunch will be spent battling other students for use of microwave...

12:45-2:45: medical physiology. actually pay attention in physiology because the slides don't give me enough information to pass the course. although being a true slacker, I will doodle chemical structures, and renal physiology stuff from still unfinished thesis...oh no wait, that just makes me a geek.

on Weds/Thurs: 3:00-5:00: ethics. 'nuff said.

in the afternoons: daily struggle of..should I go to the gym/library? unfortunately the gym is packed after class, but also unfortunately, it's hard to hitch a ride in the late afternoon.....yes, I'm never accountable for my massive weight gain because I can always blame the saba gym and the hitching Gods for never having rides back to windwardside.

at night: mondays: Heores
tuesday: sucky tv night, so I sulk in my room for the entire night wednesdays: lost and the nine
thursdays: ugly betty and grey's anatomy
friday: drunk off my *** or watching a movie drunk of my ***
saturdays: praying that Showtime will have a decent movie on
Sundays: just counting down the hours till Desperate Houswives...

oh yah and somewhere inbtw I find time to study. so yah, that's the day in the life of a second semester student. happy now?

germany

YES! I'm also interested! Miasma, have you been following the Oilers at all this year? We're looking just solid; definitely taking the cup. Right now we're coming off of huge wins over Phoenix and Detroit, leaving us with a record of 6-2-0. I actually went to the game against the Sharks the other week where Smytty broke the record for the fastest hatrick (2 minutes 1 second).

I don't suppose they have CBC down there?

4:45 Wake up with a terrible headache. Wash down IBprofen with warm flat beer

5:00 Get up to get a drink, discover I'm out of warm flat beer and drink water straight from bathroom tap by cocking head under faucet. Split lip because i'm in the dark and balancing on a bum knee.

5:30 Get up to pee, and discover I'm not in my house. Go back to sleep anyways.

6:30 Call my roommate to see if he knows where the heck I am and how I got there. His girlfriend answers his phone and promptly hangs up on me.

6:45 Wander outside to get my bearings, discover I actually am in my house. Say "Hi" to roommate girlfriend on the way back in.

7:15 Pounding on the bathroom door awakes me from my slumber atop the john, realize leg has fallen asleep.

7:45 Run out to roommates bus with shirt in hand, because his honking is finally getting on my nerves.

7:50 Put on sunglasses because of photosensitive eyes and headache.

7:55 Suck down a cancer stick, which usually makes me nauseated on an empty stomach.

8:45, 10:00, 11:00 Wake up from absesce seizures long enough for smoke breaks.

11:15 Miss Kaplan attendance because i'm listening to music, Kaplan lady stares at me because this happens daily. Classmates laugh.

11:20 Pull out jacket from seatback, arrange it into pillow, pass the hell out.

12:30 Wake up with zipper marks or "ASDF" on the side of my face, a semi-paralyzed right brachial plexus, and confused.

12:35 Smoke break again, come back into class for the last 5 minutes, get more looks from Kaplan lady.

12:45-1:30 Work out in gym with classmates, using professor that failed me in first semester as motivation. Yell at workout partner in spanish.

1:35 Reward smoke for job well done in gym

1:45-3:30 Listen to music for open mic night, download powerpoints I should have had last week, play games.

So that's my typical day at school.... if you want to know my nightlife, I can go on and on about that....

WOW you go to lab at midnight!??!! That's dedication for you :) I used to drag myself in on the weekends and the night b4 lab exams.. I'll tell you about my day on the wards. I just started psych on Monday. I'm at the KC veterans hospital. its an inpatient ward sooo as you can imagine, the patients are VERY acutely ill. Ummm.. I get there at 7:30 AM, some of the other students I'm rotating with are at KUmed so they have didactics. They usually get there a bit later. I review my pts records from the night b4, labs, new meds, nursing notes etc. Then I go talk to them, write records, read. We round at 1:00 PM, which is a little strange. Rounds usually involves each student presenting there patients to the team ( I have 3 now) and discussing the plan. Then the team visits each pt, my team has about 10 pts. Then you can read or if there are no new pts, we can leave... today I left at 4:00 PM and there are no on call nights for students in psych (at least at this rotation). I LOVE it so far.. but enough blabbing for me :)

:blah:

yo germany, have a little time tonight, so i'll keep this thing going i guess. have a lab practical this friday, studying for it now. then computer exams on tuesday. first semester is ok so far, lots of studying for sure (i've definitely had to change my study habits quite a bit). you really have no idea how much you'll be studying a day until you get here and experience the classes yourself. for some, it'll be one hour a night. for others, more like 5-6. it all depends on what kind of learner you are, and if your short-term memory is good (not saying this is a good thing - especially for medicine). anyways, don't expect to be partying too much though, because those are usually the students that don't make it too far. hope this helps dude.

Good stuff, miasma!

So what happens when the block of exams finishes on Tuesday? Does everyone tend to go out and have a few drinks, or is it pretty much right back to the books to get ready for Wednesday? Seems like they should have the blocks of exams on Friday so you guys could party a little.

I usually dont post much on here but hopefully this spreads. The pwned game, which is a variation on the word 'owned', is played very simply. When someone in class gets owned like they raise their hand and give off a super scientific answer that they obviously read last night to try and impress the teacher...lets say .......and then ... simply shakes his head and says not really you have the right to say "pwned" out loud in class. this happens about 3 times an hour in 2nd semester and the teachers dont really mind it as our bus driver and me say it constantly. you can also throw in the word "awkward" whenever someone makes a weird joke that isnt really funny but makes everyone a bit uncomfortable. this probably doesnt sound as cool as i think it is, but me and the bus driver (not named for security purposes) have a good time. let me know if it works out.

it just occurred to me this afternoon when i was thinking about those poor saps at Ross/SGU (who will be spending $60K-$100K more, respectively, for their education) that for the money i'll save by attending Saba i can literally go to st. maarten nearly *every* weekend i'm at Saba and drop ~$1000 on casinos and high-priced european hookers (doh! strike that last part; can't find backspace key), i mean ~$1000 per weekend on a nice secluded hotel room for studying and eating the highest priced surf and turf available. that's every freaking weekend!

saba should put that paragraph right into their brochure.

hmmm... i don't know. i mean i appreciate the details and all. but "the owned game?" i'm thinking even solitaire might trump that one.

then again i guess i've never played, so you might be right. btw, your bus driver doesn't happen to be named Otto and live in Homer's garage sometimes and take Bart to school, right?

so here's how i imagine the first 10 weeks of the 1st semester on Saba might go: (=> total loss/gain)

weekend #1: go to sxm; lose $1k at blackjack; take ferry back home Sunday; => -$1K

weekend #2: sxm; lose $1k at blackjack; take ferry back home; => -$2K

weekend #3: sxm; lose $1k at blackjack; take ferry back home; => -$3K

weekend #4: sxm; win $4500 at blackjack; get laid (-$1K) ; take flight home; => +$0.5K

weekend #5: sxm; lose $400 at slots; take ferry; => +$0.1K

weekend #6: sxm; win $5500 at blackjack; twins! (-$2.5K); take flight home; => +$3.1K

weekend #7: sxm; lose $1.5K at slots; single (-$1K); take ferry; => +$0.6K

weekend #8: sxm; no slots; rent a limo ($400) + 2 cartons of eggs ($5); drive through AUC campus and throw eggs out of moonroof at AUC med students' dorms (w.t.f., why not?); take ferry; => +$0.2K

weekend #9: sxm; win $10K at blackjack; room massage with happy ending (probably a comp, but let's include tip --> $0.1K); take plane home; => +$10.1K

weekend #10: stay on Saba and crush block exams; => +$10.1K

That's right -- $10,000 ahead of the game. and that's only the first 10 weeks. now multiply that by 7. can't wait until january.

Sounds like fun, only if I went to St. Martin every weekend like that I would flunk out!
(You know that block exams are every 3 weeks, right?)

I'd like to charter the helicopter guy to take me to St. Maarten this weekend, but we have to do the darn Kaplan Diagnostic exam tomorrow...on a Saturday!

Nate-MD
10-27-2006, 07:38 PM
I'm going to do my damndest to be hung over for that diagnostic and here's my reasoning..... if i'm hung over, i can't concentrate and will do poorly. My resultant 19% on the diagnostic will light the fire that will carry me through the rest of the Kaplan course and off the island. With the Tigers sucking so hard in the world series, finding an excuse to drink will not be hard.

Nate-MD
10-28-2006, 11:05 AM
Tigers lost, I had my excuse.... puked all over someones car door, got up 4 hours later for my diagnostic, which wasn't really that bad considering I was having trouble keeping my eyes focused on the page. I had to pull the one eye trick several times. Now i'm going to go home and give my liver a rest.

i think that'll work ok with my schedule. i might ask them to rearrange things just a bit when i get there to better accommodate my tastes. maybe one block every 5 weeks. i think that's a reasonable compromise.

now that i think about it, maybe every 7 weeks. i think it's important to establish who's in charge with the faculty right from the start. (that'd be me, not them, in case anyone's wondering).
