Answers to your questions on the last half of this thread here (http://www.valuemd.com/saba-university-school-medicine/121245-computer-needed-apple-pc.html?highlight=printer) and how to transport it here (http://www.valuemd.com/saba-university-school-medicine/117605-tons-questions.html?highlight=printer). You could buy a printer off of a 5th semester student, but we will all be gone by the time you get here and will have sold all our stuff already. At the end of first semester you will actually be on the island when the then 5th semesters are having their big garage sale, if you wanted to wait for that.
I know that you can buy HP inkjet cartridges on the island, but others are hard to come by. If I were to start over in first semester (in some bizarro nightmare world), I would buy one of those $99 black and white laser printers from Office Max or wherever along with an extra toner cartridge. Then I'd be set and wouldn't have to ever think about it again..

Wolfvgang said it right. Unless you absolutely insist on having a color printer, you are best off with the $100 or so black and white laser printer from Office Max or wherever. Bring an extra toner with you also, since you probably won't be able to buy one here easily. If you plan on using the printer a lot, the laser printer will save you in the long run.
As far as shipping the printer, your best bet will be ******* Free Export. They do a good job of shipping stuff...I'd recommend it if you have any other boxes you want to send too.

I agree with Kingmo, bring a laser down with refill toner. I got my refills off of ebay and have already refilled once since I've been here. Some printers like mine (Lexmark) need a chip to trick the printer into accepting the refilled toner. The kits off ebay usually come with that chip and the toner is in powder form (which I didn't know, thought it was liquid ink). Try to get a semi-good one because you will be printing tons of word docs and handouts.
