Alright, I'm gonna brag a little, but i'm really bragging about the opportunities SGU has given me. And to tell you the truth, i was a bit amazed myself when i realized the places SGU has taken me. So if it atleast inspires one potential applicant, then i'll go ahead and boast.
11 countries
Just from traveling to and from the caribbean i've had the opportunity of having my passport stamped by Grenada, St. Vincent, Trinidad, and Barbados. Going on the Honduras selective brought me to another country. While doing my first 2 clinical rotations in Michigan, i was able to travel to Canada. Then i went to England for my next 2 rotations. While there i took weekend trips to Ireland, France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Clinicals: 2 countries, 3 states, 6 cities, 8 hospitals (3 of them children's)
The variety of options available for clinicals has taken me through 8 hospitals:
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, Pontiac, MI (IM and surg.)
Poole General, Poole, England (OB/GYN)
St. Ann's Poole, England (Psych)
Miami Children's, Miami, FL (peds)
Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, IN (unaffiliated elective)
Children's Hospital of Mich., Detroit, MI (unaffiliated elective)
St. John Hospital, Warren, MI (req'd peds elective)
North Oakland Medical Center, Pontiac, MI (family practice)
Sure it hasn't been easy to always be living out of suitcase or to find housing, but i wouldn't trade if for the world. Granted, i didn't take the path that the majority of students take. I wasn't at a clinical center. I went to England. And i went on a selective. So perhaps my experience has been the exception rather than the rule, but still it serves to show what is possible at SGU. You'll be hard-pressed to find a North American medical school which offers even the option of having such a variety of locations and experiences. Ok, i'm done bragging.
