Does anyone know what the deal is with books? Do most people buy the books ahead of time from the semester order form so the books are waiting for you during orientation week, or should you wait to buy the books once you start classes? Also, is it a good idea to buy the Kaplan USMLE step 1 home study books to take with you to the island? I was thinking it would be a good idea to integrate my everyday studying with USMLE step 1 studying.

I would say that from what I saw most people bought their books ahead of time through the vender the school deals with who ships them to the island for you. However, I wouldn't say that is best. You can buy used books cheap on the island and save yourself a ton. Of course, if you want perfectly new books then you might just as well buy them that way.

I wouldn't think that the Kaplan guides are that great to study with for your classes. You would be better off mastering FIRST AID for the USMLE Step 1 along with each class.

Best of luck!

forget about textbooks. spend the money on review books. study from your class syllabus. and if you need text reference, use the school's subscription to AccessMedicine online.
