I just Interviewed for the FOM program at SGU. Was wondering how long it takes to hear back from SGU and can you be denied entrance to the FOM program after the interview. Thanks guys.

yes you can be denied entrance into any program. and it will probably take about 4 weeks or so to hear back from the admissions committee.

from what I can tell it takes the same as when they tell the regular SOM and SVM applicants.

And yes, you can be denied entrance. But, um, IMO you'd have to have a really really bad application or screw it up royally somehow in order to get denied. There's plenty of room down here. They just keep cramming people in those USGA lectures.

dude, mine was THREE HOURS LONG.

but I think that's because my interviewer found out my mentor did a residency at "big huge cool place" and he wanted contacts lol.

it was more like a ....3 hour chat session than an interview.

I left, strangely...perplexed.

So i just got accepted into the FOM program. My question now is if there is a quota of students that can go from the FOM program to the 1st year med program. For instance if I have the required 3.2 gpa but the entering class into the first year is really large, will I still be able to get accepted into the first year class?

FOM has presidence over new applicants. As long as you get your 3.2+ gpa your good to go. If you don't get a 3.2 then you will have to reinterview for a slot (depending on your MCAT and undergrad GPA).

erm, do you mean precedence?

John's kindof right- as long as you maintain the minimum GPA requirements AND pass the PMSCE (yes, they'll make you take it) then you're golden. If you don't, then you have one of the following options 1) go somewhere else 2) re interview for your spot (least likely) 3) go MPH (most likely) or 4) go in the alternate aka "decel" program

Presidence=the office, function, or term of office of a president

Precedence=the right to precede in order, rank, or importance; priority.

yay lets hear it for spell checker!

yup, ment *PRECED*ence, MS word and ESL did me in on that one =P.

If you are FOM you generally won't take the PMSCE as you have taken the MCSE, if you are School of Medicine Arts and Science (SOM/AS) you do. Check with your advisor to be sure which you fall under.

If you took the MCAT you won't be taking the PMSCE.

What is FOM? Is this a program similar to Ross' MERP program?

not always the case. I know several people that had fairly good MCATS and still had to take the PMSCE.

And to the nismo-I'm not up to speed on the exact specs of the MERP prog but yeah, FOM is kinda like that.

Not to be anal about it, but as described to me by bayshore as well as Mrs. Johns at Administration here on island, the only reason one would take the PMSCE is if you 1. never took the MCAT or 2. Did not fair well on the MCAT.

I have yet to see anyone, hear of anyone nor am I in any FOM classes with anyone who is opting to take the PMSCE that has already taken the MCAT. That is not to say it doesn't happen.

I do not know anything about the Pre-Vet side of the house, what the requirements are for SOVM, yet I know the FOM shares the same courses as the Vets FOM (FOVM?).

Does anyone have information on the FOM program? How long it is? The location? Which courses are part of the curriculum?

Mm I know of a few people who are horrid test takers that scored 17's (there are two) that were brought into the FOM track. They had previous work exp and high GPA's (3.8ish). So the school is giving them a shot. Basically its a trial run.

The FOM classes:
A & P
Biochem
Ab Psych
Genetics
Advanced College Writting/Reading
Study Skills (not graded)

You have to take ALL the courses. There are several persons who have masters in say Psychology yet they are taking Ab Psych; noone is exempt from any courses. You will hear a lot of "I took X back at my university" or "I have a degree in Chemistry, why do I need to take a biochem class?".

The hardest class for most people I am with is Biochem followed by Genetics.

I'm starting FOM in January but Bayshore told me that if you have enough experience of i.e. psychology then they will consider swapping that particular course for something that is more useful to you (i.e chemistry)rather than you having to do abnormal psychology.

Hope that helps

No one was exempt from courses this term. We have one guy named Matt who has a masters in Psychology, is a certified counselor and is the Tutor/SI here for psych... he is in the Ab psych class as a FOM student not as an observer.

If they are changing it, that would be great for many incomming students and will save space in some of the packed classes!

Yes, that is what BAYSHORE says but what Bayshore says and what Grenada does are often 180 degree polar opposites :(

JohnUSA: You'll want to edit out the real names in your post before steph gets on you (it's a TOS violaton-we can't say other people's real names, only initials)
