Hi all,

i was looking at the website and noticed that ROSS offers no dormatories for their students. So pretty much all students live off campus...How much is the cost of an apartment? Are they safe?...etc. Also, for those who are students, how much does it cost a year, not an estimate but what has it costed you? i checked the website but having your guys answer is always more reliable:cool:

I think RUH (Ross University Housing) is either owned or affiliated with the school...but I don't know if that qualifies as dormatories or not. Probably not.

I'm going in Jan '07...so I've got no idea about actual costs but you can take a look at the ross housing website to get an idea. Plus there's lots more information on here if you look a bit.

There are lots of alternatives for apartments in Dominica, and the rents are listed on the Ross website housing data base. For candid opinions of various places to live, you might want to visit the sticky called Housing in Dominica at:

For students such as you who really felt better if Ross owned student apartments, the university established Ross University Housing (RUH). They are modest single apartments located very close to campus and the beach. So unlike most US medical schools, Ross does offer student housing. However, there are tons of options for safe and inexpensive apartments close to campus for students to live in owned by Dominicans.

find a place off campus, RUH is the equivalent of a third rate motel room out of some low budget horror flick. Don't let the price fool you, there are much closer and nicer places to live. The only convenience, is that you don't have to look for a place the moment you arrive.

When I stayed in RUH 1st semester about 20 months ago...$400/month
True it is similar to a low class motel, but I did get to know a lot of students and formed a study/grill session group. I enjoyed the pool too, but for the last 6 months I was on the island I remember it was out of service. I really enjoyed living in a studio apt on Lizard trail for $650/month. I guess I would recommend staying the 1st night at RUH for free, if you like it great, if not then walk around and talk to students get landlord #'s.

I dont think theres nothing really wrong with RUH. I never lived there but it seemed like a decent place to live for your first semester if you didnt find anyplace to live while on the housing tour.

A lot of places off-campus are safe so dont worry. However you do gotta be careful, and on Dominica, it NEVER hurts to be extra careful down there(regardless of what your dealing with). So no matter where you live, take the extra time to lock up your valuables (if you have any - or better, just leave em back in the states), lock ur suitcases, and keep extra cash money to a MINIMUM (use your bank account), and just be smart about it. Also if you leave your laptop at home make sure you secure it to the steel rods on the windows...etc, using a targus lock or something. I fortunately never had a problem on the island with the cleaning ladies or landlords, etc, so our stuff was always safe. (It also think its a good idea to get to know them as well and get on a first name basis with em, so they know you too.)
But there are several people that unfortunately find themselves in a bad situation (money gone, etc). But just be smart and be extra careful. Dominica is a real safe island (as safe or safer than the U.S.)....but dont fall into that false sense of security....thats the mistake some students do make and pay for.

i agree, use common sense and you should be fine. There are shuttle buses that run from Ross Library as soon as it gets dark to drive students to their doorstep. The bus driver waits for you to enter the building. Unless you decide to go through dark bushy areas alone at night, something might happen to you, otherwise you will be fine.
The apartments all have security bars on them. I never lived on campus and have found a nice one bedroom apartment for $500 a month.
