LOL...I have the samething as you and I didn't get accepted...worse I was told that I am astrong candidate...and that the interviwer called me and told me his shocked why I didn't get accepted...and he said it had to be because of my MCAT score and should retake it....I am siting here studying for the MCAT again...I think it was so0ooo hypocritical of them to say we look at not just MCAT and GPA.....

Hi, are the interviews done in Miami? Thanks

Gchild46
11-22-2006, 08:28 PM
interviews are done in the regional offices nearest to where you live..NJ for the northeast, Miami for the southeast and Ca for the west coast...etc... when you receive the info to schedule an interview.. you have the choice to pick where you want it to be completed at...

Hi guys,

I just received "the call" today and am so happy that I got accepted. I actually applied for the January class but was told that it was full. I am waitlisted for that semester, but with the 1 month that I have to prepare to up and leave for the island...I'm actually thankful that I'll go in May instead...actually I'm just thankful I got in...

Anyway, I'm rambling... Anyone from Los Angeles/Southern California going in May please e-mail/pm/post a reply so we can plan to get together before going to Dominica if you would like...

Happy Thanksgiving !

I applied for Jan 07, I was told by my interviewer that I got in for Jan 07, but when I got my package it said May. It took them about a week to figure out who screw up. So, I am joining the May 07 class, actually it's better this way have more time to prepare. Anyone from Philadelphia?

I received my packet last Monday, it was the January version. It said on the letter that they'll send the updated May version as soon as they have it produced. I guess they just want me to look over the requirements that needs to be done (i.e. health clerance, certificate of good conduct etc.) ...

Hey folks,

Just wanted to wish everyone the best as you begin your careers as doctors. I graduated from Ross in June and have to say, life is good! I had a wonderful experience with Ross, made some great friends, had a lot of fun along the way, and matched into anesthesiology. If you go there with genuine intentions of studying hard, you'll be fine. Good luck people!

for those who know, can we use some of the forms on this page to get the paperwork started, such as immunizations, police record stuff, etc? i have already had a head start for financial aid..all they needed was proof of citizenship so i scanned and emailed them my passport. i know may is still a long time away but i just want to get a lot of things out of the way.

also, is the may class size really smaller than sept and jan as someone mentioned above?

This is in an Adobe pdf format, so if you have Adobe on your computer, you should be able to read it. I tried converting the file from pdf to Word, but it won't allow me to do it. If I could cut and past the whole thing here, I'd do it.

if you're talking about housing on the island then, like the majority of people say, its better to wait until you get there..which is what i'm going to do. if you want to read up on housing, check out the housing sticky and read what people have to say about it. check out the map sticky also so u can get an idea of where the housing is located on.

Hi guys,

regarding laptops...I found a great deal at Office Depot...I got an IBM Lenovo for $800 after mail-in-rebate. It has the same specifications as what Ross recommends. The only downside is that its pretty heavy 6.2 pds and has a 15" TFT. Anyhow the sale ends on December 24, so if you're looking for laptops you might want to check Office Depot...

Has anybody secured Housing yet ???

Hi,

I am a first semester, 26 year-old female, who is actually on a medical leave of absence. I will be returning to Ross in May as a repeat first semester. Unfortunately as a first semester, if you need to leave the island emergently due to medical reasons (I was med-flighted off the island at the end of October when I lost circulation in my leg b/c of a blood clot) you have to actually withdraw and lose credit for the semester and have to repeat it, so when I return I return as a first semester again. I will return with a wealth of knowledge though, I guess the time spent on the island was worth something. I can share some wisdom with you. First bit of knowledge - purchase the medical evacuation insurance - you never know when you might need it.

I made the right decision coming to Ross. Life is difficult and the experience is eye opening but worth it. I don't regret making the decision to go there. I can't wait to get back there. You will make many life adjustments, but for the better. The island is absolutely beautiful and has a lot to offer. Go early so you can explore and enjoy it before classes start. After they do, Ross owns you and you will have little time to hike, sail, shop, kayak, explore, hang on the beach, etc.

Take time to enjoy the culture once there. The people of Dominica are pleasant, kind, and helpful. Greet everyone with a smile and a kind word and they will be more than willing to help you. Dee, the juice lady always saved me an extra bottle of fresh squeezed mango juice after I befriended her on day one.

Food is not the best down there. But you will survive. There is always pizza, Subway, Indian, Chinese, and enough veggies at the market to make killer stirfry. The shacks are edible and you learn to like it. You will find your favorite and stick to it - but I challenge you to venture out and try somehthig new. However, pack as much nonpershable comfort food as you can in your suitcase and send yourself a box or barrel 2 weeks before you leave so you will have food down there. Comfort foods like canned soups, cereal, mac and cheese, flavored oatmeal, granola, cereal bars, chips, etc. are very expensive on the island. Send yourself some. Pack a plastic bowl, plate, cup, utensils, coffe, mug, can opener (you would not believe how hard it was for me to find one - i stared at a shelf of canned food for weeks and could not eat it b/c i did not have a can opener), cutting board, and basic cooking supplies, and seasonings. Things sell out quickly at Tina's and James' Store and you have to wait til the next shiping crate comes in - don't get stuck waiting for your can opener :)Most things are expensive and hard to find without bargain shopping and much hunting. For instance, I could not find ginger - main ingredient in many stir frys and seeig as though it makes a great stir fry sauce (ginger soy) and most of the veggies are stir fry veggies (bok choy and peppers) and rice is so abundant - stir fry is an easy and popular meal. I had to send it from the states. Bring a large canister of gatorade powder. You get dehydrated easy - it's HOT! Bring protein powder or bars - meat is not the best and you do need to eat. Never eat meat from the shacks after noontime - you increase the risk of food poisoning (it sits out in the heat all day - trust me I know from experience)

Other things to pack - personal products like your favorite brand of shampoo, and conditioner, and face wash, and for the females - feminine hygeine products (tampons are sold singly and are like $4 each!!!!). Don't go overboard...you will be back for breaks and you can get everything you do need, but it is at a price. I just suggest you pack up a box or 2 of stuff 2 weeks before your departure date and send it to yourself.

Make sure you pack a good umbrella, rain coat, good sneakers/hikers, bug repellent, flashlight, water bottle/nalgene, gatorade powder, protein powder, multi vitamins, sunscreen, recharable batteries, powersurge strip for your laptop, and a positive attitude :)

Apartments - don't look for places along lizard trail - although they are gorgous, they are not very safe - they have the highest crime rate. I had a friend held up by a machette during day light hours and the trail is always in the police blog for muggings. It is quite secluded from main roads and very dark at night. Banana Trail is safe and close to campus and reasonably priced. I have a bunch of friends who lived there and were very happy. Moo Cow Trail is also a good option It is farther from campus but right across from the Annex, where are classroom is located - and the campus has a free shuttle at night that will transport you home so you don't have to walk from main campus home in the dark. Glain Villa is a bit of a ways from campus. You might need a bike if you live there. However, wherever you live, Ross has a shuttle service that deprts from the library every half hour and brings you to your apartment. There's really no need to worry about safety. Just never travel alone. This is only my own personal opinion and the opinions of my friends while down on the island - only mere suggestions. I lived in RUH and it was OK. I am contemplating living elswehere when I return. It was OK for a start. I liked having all first semesters living around me. I met a lot of my very good friends and had people to travl to class with and study with. It is also very close to campus and is very safe and patrolled by guards. However, I hated not having a kitchen. I am undecided. If anyone is looking for a roomate....contact me. My friends down there are activiely looking for an apartment for me...I should find a great place.

Books - you really only need the required texts, all the BRS review books, and Netters Clincal Anatomy. Rojan's Anatomy book is really helpful too. All other recommended texts can be purchased cheaper from upperclassmen leaving the island once you get on campus. Or from a students who run the island island thrift store on Lizard trail - greatly reduced books run by Ross students.

School supplies - paper, pens, binders and such - bring or ship as much as you can - it's so expensive on the island. Paper is scarse.

Final advice - enjoy your free time and sleep now - you will have little of it once you get there - but it will all be worth it in the end. It is difficult, but you will meet some amazing people who are going through the same thing as you and you all learn to help eachother get through it. Everyone is there b/c they truly want to study medicine.

Hmmm.....I think that is all I can think of right now....feel free to e-mail me with any additional questions. I appologize for the lengthy post. I wish someone had given me more advice before I landed on the islanded totally clueless last September. I am just hoping to help in any way I can. Keep in touch and I hope to see you in May.

~Melissa

P.S. For those starting in May who have been out of school for a while, I suggest brushing up on Genetics and basic Biochemistry. You have no idea how quickly professors fly through material. Just an example....Cell Biology is taught in 2 weeks! If you struggled with these subjects, or it has been a while since you have taken them or reviewed them, just familiarize yourself with them. Don't be like me...checking out the Genetics text in the library to review pedigree analysis. You should be able to look at a pedigree and know the inheritance pattern cold. They expect to come there with this knowledge. Do yourself a favor now if you have the time. Time is something you don't have once classes start. Work piles up quickly and you can't waste time reviewing things you should already know. Professors assume you have mastered every single topic covered on the MCAT - go to Ross with that attitude. Enjoy your last few months now. But if you have spare time, review the topics you struggled with on the MCAT. You will save yourself a lot of grief the first few weeks of classes. Just a suggestion. I wish I had.

damn there go the next 4 month of laziness

rainne symphony
01-02-2007, 11:43 PM
What I learned during my first few days here is that "far" by American standard is about 15 minutes walk (and I don't walk fast). The Dominicans here don't think that anywhere that is far to us is far...

If one is lazy of walking, there is always a transport (a public minivan) to take at the end of certain roads for 1 EC, and shuttle provided by the school at night time that will drive the students to their doorsteps.

My best advice is to just expect the basics - water, edible food, and shelter. Then, everything else will be luxury.

ps: attitude = altitude.
Feel free to PM me if there's anything I can do to help :)

Hey ppl,

My interview was on Dec 20, and still no word. Those that got their acceptance recently, when was your interview? I am really buggin, trying to figure out why still didnt get a response.

Thanx for the replies.

It took me three weeks to hear from Ross after my interview. Each week they receive a list from the Island, it usually comes in on Thursday. If your name is on the list they will give you a call and then send you a welcome package.

Good Luck.

It's a LOT! BUT the good new is there is a used bookstore on the island that is run by some students. They beat the bookstore prices and amazon.com which is awsome. and no shipping! I bought a bunch of books from them and saved some $$. Just a hint! i looked on another site and i found one thru AA.com for $688 from Miami with no overnights as well...i'm looking to leave on april 23rd to get settled in a week before orientation and registration. As far as leaving the island, i cant find anything for the 18th or 19th of august...the price i quoted above is for a return on the 20th..which sucks but w/e.

I've thought about going from Miami to Antigua or Barbados and then taking Liat to the island and doing the opposite in return. They have dates for returning on the 18th but the luggage weight might be an issue. I guess i'll have to figure something out soon.

Hey look, I'm post-happy.

islandthrift
01-25-2007, 12:30 PM
Hey guys, as I'm sure you've read about Island Thrift in our other posts so I will mainly stick to some advice here.

DO NOT SHIP ANY ELECTRONICS. They are subject to a 100% customs tax and if you don't have a receipt they will just make up a number, probably more than you spent on the Island.

Do NOT bring an electric alarm clock that you need to plug in because in the states the electricity does 60 cycles per minute on 110v and here it does 50 cycles per minute on 220v and if you convert it to 110v, it's still 50 cycles which means your clock will run slow. Most people use their cellphones as an alarm or you can bring a battery operated alarm clock.

Bring any and all over the counter and presciption medications you need or may need. You can get a prescription here or find over the counter meds here but they are the european brands not the US and may differ slightly. But things like Aleve and Nyquil are very hard to come by and they're expensive.

Come to the island several days before orientation starts so you can fully take advantage of the free island tours given by Ross.

Try to find housing ahead of time! Your class will be the biggest class yet at Ross so the majority of good housing will be taken long before you get here. Price is a good indication of how nice the apartment is. If it's close and nice, it's expensive. If it's far and eh, it's cheap. There are some nice places further from campus but they are more of a hassle than it's worth. I lived far my first semester and I found it a much bigger inconvenience than I originally thought it would be. I now live 3 minutes walking distance to Ross and I don't have to worry about coordinateing my time with transports or taxis to get to and from campus.

One last piece of advice, try not to fly in on a Saturday or a Sunday because everything shuts down on Sunday. You will nto be able to buy food or electricity on these days. The only things open on Sundays are th Chinese Restaurants and Indian Restaurants. That's it.

If you have any questions about books, classes or life in general at Ross, please free free to e-mail us at info@islandthrift.com.

liqu0rleadstocha0s
01-25-2007, 12:44 PM
thanks for the advice islandthrift. one thing though, are you saying reserve housing before we get to the island? so far everyone has said wait until you get to the island.

islandthrift
01-25-2007, 12:49 PM
I didn't reserve housing prior to coming here and I wished I did. All of my friends who didn't reserve housing ended up wishing they did too even though everyone told us to get housing once we get here. The two or three friends I do have that did reserve housing prior to coming down were much happier because they were in a nice place close to campus rather than in the left overs. You can do what you want but it is easier on you not to go on the housing tour because they scare you into renting the first thing you can grab, even if you don't like it. That is what happened to me.

Hello everybody, I will be in the May '07 class as well. I had my physical last week and will have my doctor finalize the visa paperwork this Thursday. Will fill out FAFSA this week and I guess Sally Mae at the same time, but I'm still not sure how much to get a loan for. I know that whatever cash I don't use this term I can hang on to, but I don't want to borrow too much money (or dip too much into savings). If any current students can provide a realistic amount to borrow for the first year (tuition, books, rent, utilities, etc.) I would appreciate it. Since one of our calendar years is actually three semesters, I imagine that a total of $45,000 is realistic. If that is too much (or not enough?) I would appreciate anyone's input that has actually gone through this situation on Dominica. I have checked the Ross website, but I am a bit trepidatious to rely solely on it for costs, because in my experience schools tends to minimize the actual expenses required. By the way, I am currently living in Chicago and will be staying in Phoenix, AZ for the last three weeks before I show up at the island (on April 30). If there is anybody in either area that is interested in getting together (or somebody showing up the same day), just post here and I will contact you! Thanks for any help you can provide!

I have yet to receive my paperwork and my packet. In my acceptance letter, I was told that the May packet was not ready yet and will be mailed out in mid-February. I hope I have enough time to get everything done. Also, what are you guys doing about housing, are you pre-booking or waiting to get over there and then decide. I have been looking in Picard and Portsmouth, Are there any other areas in the surrounding region I should look at. I don't mind walking 10-15 mins to get to school.

Thanks

Carlota321
01-29-2007, 11:38 AM
$45,000 for 3 semesters is not realistic. It costs $12000 and change per semester for tuition so for easy math's sake, let's say $13,000. That gives you a total of $39,000 just for tuition. That would leave you just $6,000 for living expences, roughly $2,000 a semester. Depending on where you live, that may not even cover rent for 4 months (1 semester). Depending on how nice of a place you want, how close to campus you want to live, and how many american products you wish to purchase food wise, I would estimate somewhere between $1500 to $2000 a month in living expenses. If you do not wish to dip into your savings, a more realistic amount to borrow per semester would be between $19,000 and $21,000 which would be between $57,000 and $63,000 a year (3 semesters). If after the first semester you didn't use a lot of your money or as much as you thought you would, you can always decline to take out as much the following semester.

It only took me about a week and a half to do all of my health forms. First, I started the series of vaccinations, and got the TB and HIV tests the same day. A rapid HIV test will suffice, so you can get the results on the clinic's letterhead the same day. The longest part of waiting was getting an appt to see my cardiologist, who filled out the forms while I was in his office. I know that some offices make you wait before getting paperwork back, but it should still be do-able in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Hey everyone.. I'm a twenty-two yr old male from Ontario Canada. I just payed the deposit for the may class and am looking forward (as I'm sure all of you are) to getting my medical career started and to meeting all of you.
After reading all of the posts from people who have done nothing but complain about the Island life, the notion that our starting class being cut into half by the time we hit 5th semester because of people failing out, the "embellished" USMLE 1st time pass rate, and the horrible organization with the clinical department, are any of you worried that you've made the right choice? Perhaps I'm overanalyzing, but reading all of these posts is getting me rather worried....

Lots of people from Ross have gone into EM. I'm planning on doing so myself -- and it looks like you and I will be carrying the torch for the EM club on the island now. Be interesting to see what kinds of things they get to do now. :)

I have not received the welcome packet yet; however, I already completed my medical forms and most of the requirements. If you have not received it yet, you should go to the Ross Unofficial website on this Forum to print out the forms. There has not been any changes to the packet content except for the dates. I'll see you all there. I am looking forward to see a lot of people studying for a change instead of me alone.:D

Not true, I spoke with my interviewer from Ross yesterday and told me that there were going to be several significant changes to the welcome packet starting with the May 07 class, but to just sit tight as everything will be in. He said you can start working on getting the shots, passport photos, passport, X-ray, HIV test, and $40 application fee, but nothing can be filled out. I specifically asked him about the welcome packet on this forum and he said it was outdated. So before you go and have a bunch of doctors sign stuff, I would wait and just get all the other stuff you can get done first.

For those who have not arranged to get your hepatitis shots, x-ray, hiv test, etc. perhaps you should look into arranging to have those done to speed up the process.
About the accuracy of my information: I was on the waiting list for the January class; therefore, I have been talking with an admission coordinator since last year. The information that I received is from her (Nor..) not from my interviewer. This information is valid as of last Friday. She was very nice and even offered to send me a packet from last semester via FedEx. Her only concern was that the dates are not accurate. Good luck!

liqu0rleadstocha0s
02-15-2007, 02:30 AM
Dr. C and this lady who i asked to send me a packet told me there isn't going to be any changes. There aren't any dates written on anything important so dates are irrelevant...don't sweat it. I got the one from last semester b/c i asked her to send it to me since i wanted to get this all done with ASAP...and no she wasn't my interviewer..she is an admissions advisor or something of that sort in the NJ office. Just get all the shots, x-rays, police report, etc., started. For some it took longer than others but i got my shots, xray and physical all done in one day at a clinic...took a while to get all of it done but got it all in one shot. Took about a week to get results from xray report and blood report and i'm good to go. dont stress it too much its not as bad as it seems. the most annoying part is for the doc to fill out the same form 3 times.

for those who got all the immunizations, did you guys get typhoid vaccine?

It really depends. Are you going to be ready to leave your friends and family so soon after graduation? Do you need a break before you start learning and studying more than you every have in your life? You do not want to start the semester burnt out. Also, keep in mind that you will not have any breaks more than 3 weeks long for the next couple of years (depending on how you schedule your rotations). On the other hand, if you start sooner, you finish sooner. Keep those points in mind when deciding. Good Luck!

go to Medical School / Ross University School of Medicine (http://www.rossmed.edu.dm)
on the left side click housing and there should be the housing office's phone number. call them and ask them for contact info for whichever place you are interested in. Also, check out the database.

DC2BMD: the clinic where i got my shots, the hep series cost about that much. my 1 month hep B shot i got at the county health department and it was $70. Check out your local county or city, whatever you have, health departments as they are cheaper there. check out this post by docdad
http://www.valuemd.com/ross-university-school-medicine/130169-overwhelmed-what-do-next.html#post566418

Mags: the only other shots that are required are tetanus/diptheria shot and make sure you have all the MMR done. If you've never gotten PPD get that done and i've heard and read on this forum that typhoid is recommended, not required though...i'm going to go get that one soon though just to be safe.

btw, i'm arriving on april 23rd so if anyone else is going on the same day hit me up. i won't have any overnights though (i hope).

It just me or any of you guys also had travel getting the letter of good conduct? I went the local police department, when I asked the officer for the letter of good conduct, he had no clue and sent me to reporting department. The lady that was there made photocopies of my ss# and license and next day called me that they don't write the letter of good conduct for people going outside of United States. This didn't make any sense? I called ross and they said it was odd so they told me to go to county police department and I went there and they said they don't write that either and I should go to local police department again. I didn't go to police department because they had no clue what I was talking about. so, I called them and they transferring me and I finally get the answer which was to go to state police headquarter so I went there. The lady told me to that I have to go to my local police department and get the fingerprint on the state applicant card then mail that to state police headquarter with $30 money order and address where I want to send.

Anyways, it drove me crazy. Why can't Ross tell us to go to our state police headquarter, instead of driving us crazy. In the police department they have no clue.

Do you guys also had this problem? or it just me?

wow that much of a headache for a police report? all the letter of good conduct is, is a simple police report. I did mine at my local police dept and it cost $5. just go to the police dept and ask for police report. all they did to mine was check my license and ss# in the records and it said no record, they put a check mark next to the appropriate box, signed and stamped it and off i went.

Same here. Actually mine wasn't even that bad. I just called my local police department, found out who I would need to talk to, they transferred me to the ID department. They said I would need a form of ID and $10.

When I went they had me fill out a consent form and took my license and within 10 minutes I was holding the "background check" --which is essentially what the letter of good conduct is .

I called up Ross at NJ immediately after I received the documentation to confirm that that was all I need, and he mentioned that some police stations require fingerprints, some do not, but Ross does not require the prints, only the document of the background check.

So, I should be set.

Believe it or not, the health forms will take longer than a day. You may want to check with your doctor and see which shots they have available and suggestions of where to go for the ones they do not. Also ask for where you should go to get your chest x-ray done.

well the visa paperwork is basically the white, yellow and blue forms. it's really no big deal. it might take a day...might take longer...it all depends. mine took a day because i went to a clinic where i got my immunizations, chest xray and physical done in one shot. i just had to go back a few days later for the blood work info and chest xray report. make sure you get everything signed and stamped also.

is lack of common sense a violation of TOS? i'm guessing if it was this board would have a lot less flaming ;)

So what if he's asking that? The way I see it he's just excited and wanted to post to show off a little...no harm in that. Its our viewpoints that differ here thats the thing. I did give thought to his post and I do not believe that he meant any *harm* by it. I believe you are reading too much into the post...the moment you saw the phrase "got accepted to Chicago College of Medicine" something inside of you snapped. Don't be so prone when you see US med students posting about their school and such.

And yes I'm fully aware there are jerks out there who love to flame and put down Caribbean students, I've seen them. Their line of conversation is more along the following: "Carbbean students have no chance at passing the USMLE" or "Caribbean students don't even compare to US students" etc. His post didn't say any of those things did it?

You may say I'm lacking common sense, but at least I have the common sense not to get jealous and blow up when I see someone getting into a U.S. school.

are you getting my point? do you not realize the benefits of going to a US school? even if a person wants to do FP before they start med school, they can easily change their minds and being in a US school will allow you those opportunities not available to students from the caribbean. Am i jealous? who isn't? but don't you see why i'm curious as to WHY this person would ask which to choose? its beccause they have an opportunity i don't and they should go to one of the US schools they were accepted to...so would a person who is jealous and wants nothing but the worst for someone say that? NO! I am telling trauma to go to a US school and forget Ross. Don't deal with the headaches I, and many others, will deal with and learn from all the previous students who have dealt with them. I was not putting trauma down either so if that's how i came off i apologize..its just mind boggling that someone would have a hard time deciding between a US MD and a Caribbean MD. Also, i have nothing against someone posting that they were accepted to a US school...it IS a matter of celebration and i'm happy all that hard work paid off! :D

as for the jerks who put caribbean students down...the hell with them. I will be a caribbean grad and i can care less. i'm just excited to start this next chapter in my life. If there is a stigma, then so be it...i have no choice and nor do i care at this point in my life.

lastly, that common sense thing wasn't towards you shadow :D...it was just a general statement for a lot of posts on valuemd i've read in the time i've been around...ok now lets end this and get back to may 2007!! ALMOST A MONTH TILL CLASSES START!!!

I wasnt putting any carribean med student down in fact I praise them. I was just kind of confused seeing as how Ross was nice enough to offer me admissions before any of the US schools. The only reason I got into those schools is because Ive been on there waitlists forever so I was just saying I know it gives me oppourunities to go to the us schools but Ross accepted me first and its prett cra**y of the american schools to accept me now when I had planned on going to Ross and had everything in order now I have to change everything around its just annoying.

Guys I had just planned on going to Ross they accepted me first and I was looking forward to meeting all of you. By no means was I putting any carribean med student down or trying to make any of you feel like cr*p. I just thought it was pretty rediculuos that Ross accepted me first then the american schools decided to admit me now I have to change all my plans at the last minute without any notice thats all. And I consider all of you my collegues no matter where you went to school if I have something I cant handle and where all friends Im more likely to refer a patient to one of you then to someone from an american med school I dont know anything about. Dont be mad because I swear on my mother I was not trying to make any of you feel bad. thats all. Good Luck everyone maybe we'll all be docs someday.:D
