I've got to figure out how to play cricket before the games!
It should facilitate plenty of good photo ops with the influx of tourists.
I'm looking forward to it.

Still waiting for SGU to build that hotel in time for the world cup that the government says we're building...

What is cricket? Some kind of insect, like a locust?

hotel probably is sd4 and GA campus...Yeah, I was guessing SD4 too, then I realized that it's impossible cause the world cup starts before the term ends....soooo where're they gonna put all those students they crammed into SD4 this term (and I"m sure they're planning on cramming some in there next term too) make them move out halfway through the term? eh?

anyone know how much tickets are and where to buy them? I know that you have to buy them now otherwise they will sell out.

I've been to a world cup before, and We got our tickets at the door, But tickets for pakistani and Indian matches will definitely sell out, because a butt load of paki and indian people are coming to watch their teams play from the states alone.

Is the new (rebuilt) stadium ready for the cricket tournament?

It's on track.

It's on track.

Impressively on track.
It's looking awesome.

Forget that it's surrounded by people living in poverty (steel shacks), it really is a modern stadium!

The real challenges are going to be:
1. Finding lodging for everyone.
2. Transportation to the stadium.

wonder what they are planning to do with the stadium afterward...

Probably let it fall into disarray. Grenada does not need such a stadium and the money, in my opinion, should have gone towards those poor people that ModernDayGilligan mentioned.

There are lots of people still in need after the aftermath of Ivan.

i say they convert the stadium into a some sort of apt complex. it would be an unique stadium styled apt complex.

I'd like to see them convert it into a Skittle Factory.
No ice cream flavored ones, though.

Off topic....but I was under the impression that Grenada had essentially recovered from Ivan. Where is the need?

GND has not recovered from Ivan in terms of economy, do you think New Orleans has recovered from Katrina in just over a year? i dont think so, and if NO cant, a city in the USA, i doubt GND can in 2 yrs time.

Tickets can still be obtained. I would advise you to talk to a hotel concierge or manager, they can put you in contact with people selling them. I asked last week, and was quoted face value, expect that to change as it gets nearer (and if the West Indies team gets to that stage).

Has tourism bounced back?

I thought that the massive amount of rebuilding had actually created a mini boom, giving many of the locals employment.

Tourism? there was never really that much tourism in the first place. Just cruise ships pretty much. And I guess some Europeans go there for vacation. but not too many americans.

There are still lots of people suffering from the aftereffects of the hurricane; both directly and indirectly (some, of course, profited immensely). There are still people, for example, without a proper roof over their head.

It's not as apparent in the wealthier south of the island which is where 99.5% of students spend 100% of their time.

As well, the mini boom as you put it can only last so long. When that dies down, as it is in the process of doing, is when the real effects will become more apparent.

Having said that, Grenada's come a lot farther a lot faster than I expected (thanks to much help from outside, of course).

I agree with Ishie regarding the influx of people. I don't know how that's going to work. My father is already readying himself to deal with the fact that town will be pretty much shut down due to traffic i.e. no business.

wonder if sgu will set up a curfew during that week for students

I wonder if they'll need to. Heh heh.

Though the school seems more interested in getting us drunk and laid... Organization sponsored drunken bashes and palpation as a form of an introduction... I think I'm going to like it here!

No cricket for me though. Seems big here though. To illustrate how little I know about it, I kept wondering why a lot of the little boys around town were carrying frathouse discipline paddles around until someone pointed out they were cricket bats.

That stadium does look really out of place though...

that is how the sgu stuents greet each other and how the upper termers welcome in the 1st termers.

Ishie-those "cricket bats" are used in the secret SGU greeting ritual that you will learn after your welcome introduction ceremony next weekend. We just make them look like cricket bats to they won't be suspicious.

On another note, I wonder what they are planning on doing with the parking situation-a bus driver (non-sgu employee-an in towner) told me they hadn't done ANYTHING so far. Anybody know?

Don't get why they would do this, everyone is an adult (aren't they?)

Me neither. It's not going to happen in any case.

One would think. Quite a few don't act like it.

And many don't act like they have any kind of morals, self-respect, etc. There have been many times that I've thought to myself that I don't want to be associated with some of these people. A few bad apples and all that.

Anyway, going off on a tangent but it's a very big sore point with me.
