Hi all,
I wanted your help about purchasing a ticket. After ALL the suggestions, I have decided to use AJ (Air Jamaica) non-stop from NY to the Isle. It's a bit more expensive, but 1 chose this for 2 reasons:
1) They allow up to 2 Luggages up to 50 lbs each (total 100) plus a carry-on (40lbs)
2) The non-stop portion (I am assuming) will help to greatly ensure my luggage won't get lost "in-transit"
My request for help is that AJ flies from NY on certain days only and as a 1st termer I wanted to get there on or before Jan 10. They unfortunately won't fly on the 10th and 9th is the closest day. From the forum info I have heard thus far:
A) I beleive the RA won't be able to pick you up
B) You cannot be let into the dorms (b/f the 10th)
Is this true....AND is there a way to circumvent this and still go on the 9th (without booking into a hotel)....I'm po' fo sure
BTW - I am using Pro Travel and R****A, the salesperson, is very nice but VERY hard to get a hold of....oh well....it's still a better discount that AJ website
Thanks (again)

you can get into the dorm. teh dorm will be open for the upper termers as we start a week earlier than the 1st termers. however you might not get pciked up by the RA.
so just take a cab and pay about 30-40 ec for the ride to campus and before you enter, stop by the security booth at the front of the entrance and tell the guards you are a first termer and have no idea which dorm/room you will be residing at. they can either call up a RA which will come and get u or decide to be lazy and just point you to the housing office which is up the hill at the bourne center. either way you can get into ur assigned dorm room

Your luggage 'getting lost in transit' isn't due to transit sometimes but often due to the fact that your luggage never made it on the aeroplane in the first place because the flight was full. So make sure you take hand luggage with a day or two supply of clothes/toiletries.
As for arriving early, send an e-mail or a written letter (or ideally both with copies for yourself retained) to the Housing Office indicating what date you're coming in on. The RAs always arrive early so they'll let you in, plus upper termers are arriving before you, so you won't have a problem.
You're correct in that there might not be an RA at the airport to pick you up. However, it's extremely easy to get to campus (it will cost you about 30 EC for the taxi ride though). Just tell them True Blue campus (assuming that's where you're going to be housed), when you get to the gate, tell the security guard where you'll be staying, he'll verify your name on the list and let you through.
As for Miss R. you're on your own. I tried contacting her a few times and no response. It's not worth my time to be at her beck-and-call.

to add to hetal's post
if you are flying AJ out of JFK which i assume you are, then check in early. do not be the last few dozen or so ppl to check in because that will increase your chance of not having your luggage on board the plane or aeroplane.

yeah most of the time your lougage doesn't get "lost" it just simply never gets on the plane. it happened a bunch of times to my friends who travel with AJ. Just get to the airport (aerport) earily..i guess the brits would spell that (airly)?..

BTW - any experience on getting AJ tickets cheaper than what R****A sells for at Pro Travel? The website quotes $1100 and I can get it through her for $888 and change.
I haven't tried other travel agents but Expedia / Travelocity doesn't even come close....
Thanks for all the input / advice.
I truly appreciate this site!

I'm also arriving on 9th at about 3pm local time so I don't mind sharing a cab if no RAs are about. I'm flying from UK. My friend is waiting to hear after her interview so there may even be two from blighty?

another problem with the non stop is that while your bags get on the flight, they forget to take them off in GND and the get carried over back to JFK!!
As for RC at protravel- i would say avoid her like the plague!! Whileit may be cheaper, if anything gos wrong, you will be in big trouble- from not have an ticket out to not getting money back ( I had to get the Director of Operations at SGU involved to get money back form her!!)

I just paid $385 CAN for a one way direct flight from Toronto on the Zoom Air Charter. 2bags 140lbs total, 10lbs carryon. Flawless flight last time...all the bags come, 5 hours 15min door to door, its awesome. Only thing is they only have one flight arriving in GND on Jan 2 (for august they have flights every wed), so you gotta come a little earlier. Spoke to housing and they said it'd should be fine to move in early because the dorms open officially the next day on Jan 3rd.

If you can get a cheap flight to Toronto, probably a red eye since the flight leaves at 7am, its an awesome deal with luggage security. I LOVE IT.

I have bought all my tickets from R, and i know it may be difficult to get in touch with her. I definitely think its worth it, coz am broke as hell. I never had any problems with her, she even changed my date of travel to a more convenient date for free. Also she reserved my booking for me for a whole month untill I could come up with the money to pay her. I dont know what experiences others have had, just wanted to share mine.
Even if you are arriving early, just contact the school, an RA might still be able to pick you up, if not just catch a cab and ask for a receipt, the school should refund you the money. You will definitely be able to move in without any problems
