View Full Version : Help with Baltimore Housing
I am scheduled to begin Internal Medicine rotation at St. Agnes in Baltimore in early Dec. Will be there for 6 months, also for Surgery. Housing in the area looks terrible! What is the best town to live in?? I heard that most of the doctors and nurses live across the river from the city - where?? Is it ok to drive 7 miles to the hospital in the mid-winter weather??
Housing on craigslist looks terrible.
I would like to stay in a nice, comfortable place - apartment or hotel.
Also , what about beepers? Does the hospital provide these to medical students or should we buy them?
What color are the surgical scrubs worn during the Surgical rotation? (I heard they are provided by the hospital.)
I would appreciate any helpful information.

Hmm depends on how much you will to spend. You can stay downtown in a nice pad, with parking garage but it will cost you in the upper 1k region and it is difficult to get to get a 6mos lease. there are a few apartments within 5 miles of the hospital that are in decent neighborhoods and the price are not too bad. if you live to far out then you will end up driving too long and it will suck trust me when you have to come to the hospital by 520am during surgery you dont want to be up any earlier.
Beepers are given to you and trust me you wont want them after the 1st week!
scrubs colors are green and they give them to you, unless you fee the desire to spend loan money on your own scrubs then feel free to buy them

Hey mls, i currently live in baltimore st agnes area is an area you don't want to live in, innerharbor/fells point/downtown(baltimore city)area might be your best option if you don"t want to live far from the hospital, also try catonsville i believe the zip code is 21228, randallstown(21133), woodlawn/security blvd area(21244) by driving to the hopsital it around 20-30 minutes . try this website apartmentguide.com [U]apartment.com this might help

Federal Hill is also very nice in the city.
If you want not the city, but close
Catonsville/Arbutus 21228/21227
Security 21244 (not as nice an area as catonsville, but not bad either)
Elkridge is also not too far and nicer than both catonsville and security (howard county). Arbutus and catonsville have lots of students due to UMBC.
7 miles is not unreasonable. While we have gotten blizzards, it's rare. We really don't get that much snow, although 1/2 inch causes baltimore drivers to forget how to drive.
And yes...scrubs are green.
I live in the area, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

You could ask Teratos ... he's got a room for $5000/month. Breakfast in bed, chauffer service, laundry service..... pretty good deal when your in surgery!

MLS,
There are apartments located about 1/2 mile from the hospital called Westland Garden Apartments. They offer 3 month leases and have furnished units. There are many students(University of Maryland Baltimore County is right around the corner) and residents which live in the area. Also there are about 5 more apartment complexes in the area. Give them a buzz 410.242.1612. When I was rotating in St.Agnes I lived in Pikesville,MD. The drive was about 15 minutes and was a nice area to live in. I stayed at the Estates.
If you are thinking of also scheduling electives you can try Union Memorial, Sinai Hospital and Franklin Square Hospital.
take care

Try to find something in Towson or in Charles Village. Also Mt. Vernon area has pretty reasonably priced housing. One specific building downtown that I know of is Charles Towers (on Charles St.). It's downtown. I'd highly recommend the Towson area though. It's much cheaper and better especially if you have a family. It's only about 30 mins away driving.
i was wondering if anyone knows anything about prince george and the prince george area. i'm doing my psych rotation in catonsville right now but in 5 weeks i begin at pg. any areas or housing suggestions would be appreciated.

^^^^ How do you like that rotation? I'm going to be doing psych there later on this year. I'm not too familiar with PG, but I know Silver Spring and Bethesda are nice areas.....but VERY expensive. Also, the College Park area might have some good short term places due to all of the UMD students in that area. Also, DC is pretty close to PG so you can try out some places there as well.
