Was wondering what people have been doing with their existing cell phone plans at home? Since most people won't be using them in Grenada, it seems futile to keep up with a contract, no?
Since I have a contract which is expiring this month, should I stop using the phone and use just pre-paid phones when I get BACK to the states? Or did people move into "Family Plans" so the phone number stays active?
Any thoughts/experiences?

already had a family plan, so i kept my phone active
but i know many people were able to inactivate the phone for up to 4 months, so the timing works for the most part. ask your carrier what provisions they have .

If you want to keep your number, you can ask for your plan to be switched from post-paid to pre-paid. You will still have to reload it monthly or bimonthly in order to keep it active, but you can use that credit when you're home over breaks. I know T-Mobile is able to do this, but not sure about other providers. In fact, if you have T-Mobile, you can load $100 and that makes your credit valid for a year so it saves you the trouble of loading ever month in smaller denominations.

Also, what a lot of representative won't tell you...
If you say you are moving out of the country where that carrier doesn't have service coverage, or going to any Armed Forces, they will let you out of your contract with no fees. I remember Sprint charged $150 to cancel a contract, and I told them I was moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan...no problem now!!
