Met a guy from Ross who was boasting how he was about to start this rotation because it was affiliated with the Cleavland Clinic. He made the place sound as though it were the Cleavland clinic.
Anyone know how much truth their is to his statements?

Hey, i am possibly thinking of doing a surgery/IM rotation there, but don't know any students who have done those two rotations there. Does anyone know anything about it. Is it a good rotation? Bc IM is the core of medicine, if you do all crappy rotations IM should not be one of them, i really want to learn it and have a good experience. So far i have had pretty good rotations, im doing all green book and these two are offered as green book. So if anyone has any personal experience, or heard of anything to share please post a reply and give me some insight. Thanks!

I have heard from a few students that the experience there is great. Good teaching, etc.

Is it possible to do IM/Surg. in OH and also take electives there?

You can do both IM & Surg in Ohio, and I also believe Psych (in another city). You can do electives almost anywhere as long as the hospital takes you.

:DCleveland Clinic's Huron Hospital is located on the Eastside near Forest Hill Park on the former estate of John Rockfeller. It's a 211 bed acute care Level II trauma center.
The Rapid (train) station is a mile away but nearby housing in Cleveland Heights starting at $400 a month is a short car ride away. The immediate area is depressed;however, many residents live in nearby apartments.
I hope the follow information helps:
1) This rotation and a surgery rotation are "green" and sponsored by Huron Hospital. Someone told me that you must have 85% on your Step 1 to get one of these rotations. Team assignments change each month.
2) Each team is made up of one attending, three residents and two medical students. Most students are from Ross or SMU.
3) No overnight calls. Done by 3 pm most days.
4) Grand round on Mondays. Frequent lectures on multi internal medicine subjects.
5) Had two weeks of ICU.
6) Had to give short presentations of patients. Worked admissions. Some scut work and little pimping.
7) No final exam.
In summary, I thought the rotation was very professional, hands-on and educational. Housing was plentiful, cheap and nearby.

Dangrr... don't know which one is you. But i'm in IM rotation now. Is it easy to get Surgery right after your IM rotation. Does the coordinator give you a hard time for that?

Ashram, do you have any input about your rotation that you could share?

Ashram64, I received notice of both rotations at the same time. Surgery started one week after IM.

It's really a laid-back hospital and free lunch everyday which is awesome. The intern doesn't really care so its really up to you and how much you want to learn. You could easily hide in the library and read everyday if you want. Morning round at 8-9 (free breakfast on monday), and lunch conference 12-1pm.
So far I've been working 7am-4pm on average, and my resident is fairly trusted me. He let me pick patients that I want to follow. So i picked couple interesting cases. Its been exciting and a resident life isn't as hard as i anticipated.
Just wait tell surgery..i'll probably curse this place down.

Thanks for the info. Is Huron one of the places that requires a certain Step 1 score to rotate there?
Ashram64
06-07-2008, 12:35 AM
yes... 200 something score or > 85% equivalent. So is that Baltimore hospital.
Huron is great teaching hospital, since they don't have fellows.. so the residents have to do EVERYTHING. They complained to me..but they know their stuff... most of them are very friendly and willing to share their knowledge.

Thanks Ashram. When Dangrr says the area is "depressed" does that mean I should bring a flak-jacket?

it should be cold like in the winter... not there yet..

Enjoy IM because it was a picnic when compared to the Surgery rotation. I am now at the hospital from 5 am to 4 or 5 pm. Also on call one night each week. No free daily lunch.
Since Huron is a trauma center, the cases have been very interesting. Except for the long hours this rotation rules.
By "depressed" I meant the immediate neighborhood was not too good. Watch your back if you live in the nearby apartments and walk to/from work.

Dangrr, do you get to rotate through quite a few surg specialties as they say they do at St. Agnes? Can anyone else chime in on their surgery experience at Huron?

So far trauma surgery and ortho surgery--what does the next two weeks entail?
Twenty one straight days at the hospital---terrible!
Realizing that the newbie resident had never seen a trauma case and that I knew more than him---priceless!

Unbelievable he is a new resident and has never seen a trauma case where did he/she spend their medical school years. Geez a car accident is a trauma for crying out loud, knife wound, gun shot. Anything?

No death is "cool stuff". As a SMU student here at Huron I find that comment completely devoid of compassion.
