For students that have already taken Step 1, do you feel that the professors at SMU geared their classes in a way to prepare for the Step 1 exam? If not, should students read a test prep book WHILE they are taking classes throughout their 1-4th semesters? What should they do?

i don't believe the job was adequate, as reflected by our boards scores and pass/fail rate.
to make it, and score well, you should use first aid from semester 1 for ALL your classes. make it your bible.

Some professors were better than others. However it is like that in every school regardless of its location. Pay close attention to the better teachers and study a bit more for the classes taught by the ok ones.
I thought the free tutoring sessions were helpful along with having many step questions available from the school.
Overall I thought SMU prepared me well for the step.

our current 5th miami grp or even ones before ths current 5th did offer us many wknds tutoring sessions. i want to personally thank few of them here for getting me this far. today is US Thanksgiving Holiday, and let me thank the pp that i just mentioned above and also my teachers here.
however, the current 4th, the VERY BRIGHT GRP, are VERY competitive and selfish, so NONE of the current 4th senior classmate offers any 3rd semester wknds tutoring at all. more ironically, many of the current 4th semester students DO SCORE ABOUT 500-600 ON THE SUBJ SHELF. some even score above +600. then, they are not providing any tutoring to the lower classes.
believe me! if i was that smart, i would want to stand there to TEACH and to SHARE my blessing...
it is quite sad!
