.....It's basically because I know that would take me another yr to prepare for it and I've already spent 5 yrs in undergrad......

I think that you should just tell them the truth (about the yr to prepare thingy). If they feel your application is not strong enough, then I think they will tell you to take th MCATs and they'll put your application on hold.

Keep in mind, this is what the application process was like when I was applying (2 yrs ago). it might have changed from then b/c I heard it' harder to get into SABA now.

Ive heard that they are almost the same school. The president of Saba is the owner of MUA in Nevis. It's just that Saba is owned by the NA government and has been around for alot longer. I believe its the same curriculum though. This is what some of the students told me when I visited Saba.

No, it's not too late to apply. Saba's only rule of thumb is to try to apply 3 months before the class starts.

Did you apply only to SABA? Why did you pick SABA if you don't mind me asking? I was accepted to the same semester too. Although I am leaning strongly to go there, I also was accepted to SGU and am still debating on where to go and why. Any suggestions on that matter?

hey I also got accepted to MUA, already paid the deposit too :(
SABA has always been my first choice, just way too many positives to list, also I know someoen currently in fifth semester.

THe main reason why Saba is the most appealing, especially with Canadians, is the cheap tuition compared to SGU. Why pay 250K US + vs. 160K when you will get the same degree and still have 50 states accredited.

I know SGU grads keep saying they get top notch residencies but the thing is SABA gets them too and they save nearly 100,000.

It was really an easy choice for me, downside is the crappy island but that is only for 20 months, hopefully I can survive.

Come to Saba, we'll have a great time :)

Actually, I like the island a lot! Much more than Grenada! Food is much better (I've heard) than on Grenada and people are friendlier. :) No metal locks on the dorm windows, no police with dogs guarding the campus!
Yes, the island is small and has no beach, but so what! We are there to study not for vacation! Plus, it's just for 40 - 48 month depending either you want the summers off or not.
And the cost is very appealing (my mother has enough money to pay for it, so no debt for me!):D

Congrats to all of you who are attending on September 2007. I am about to wrap up 2nd semester and have no complaints so far. The island is clean, beautiful, safe, and friendly. It's small, but you can always visit neighboring islands on the weekends after exams to cut loose.

My advice is to enjoy the time you have until Sept to its fullest. Hang out with family and friends, go on vacations, etc. Have no regrets when you come here and be ready to work hard to achieve your goal.

Some pre-study, some don't. My opinion is to NOT pre-study since that's pretty much gonna be the story of your life when you start school. The biggest enemy is not the material, but the burn-out factor. Party now, study later.

Good luck everyone!

thedirtychemist
04-04-2007, 08:00 PM
Netter's Atlas for Anatomy

Basic Histology Text and Atlas by Junqueira and Carneiro

Just the two.

For 1st semester, all of the exam material will be given to you in the form of a word document and power point presentation. Having an Atlas around just gives you a better overall picture. I never really cracked the histology open bc I found the notes to be adequate; however, many liked using this book as a reference.

Informatics does NOT require a book, so don't buy it. Again, just powerpoints from her.

Embryology will be taught as part of the Anatomy curriculum usually 1 day a week. I don't think a book is necessary here either.

So to wrap up:

Hey everyone,

For anyone studying in Saba, whats your typical week like in terms of classes....and then whats there to do on the island after your done classes for the day?

Basically are we going to get bored out of our minds on the island? I come for a moedaretly big city (>1 million population) so I'm not sure how moving to a small island will be like?

I am actually really scared I wont enjoy life there, any words of motivation/advice? I'm still waiting on Canadian acceptances but if all else fails I'm probably coming to SABA.

Thanks and congrats to everyone who has been accepted!

hey user, i am having the same concerns coming from Toronto area. Many people are saying come one week early and get scuba certified so you have scuba diving u can go to on weekends. As for the regular weekdays, you don't have much time to do anything other than study. Might be able to get 1 hour to do exercise or whatever else needs to be done.

Rest assured, there are plenty of students such as ourselves in the same boat, we'll all work together to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

Good luck with the Canadian applications.

Hi everyone,
how often do the exam dates change for the first semester students? The handbook says Dec. 12-14, so does that mean that even first semester students' last exam would be on Dec. 14?
I'm trying to book my round-trip flight so am wondering if I book it for Dec. 15th, it would not cause me any trouble.
Thank you :)

Hey everyone on SABA.... I would like to ask you several questions I hope you can help. I'm just a little anxious since I have never lived on my own yet alone go to live in a caribbean island.

1) Is there high speed internet? if so how much? I was thinking of getting a VOIP line if there is high speed.

2) If I live on residence, is it hard to go around the island without a car, is the general trend to have a car or not to have one?

3) How do living arrangments work after the 20 months when we do our rotations in the States? do we have to look for appartments in the state we go to?

4) Is there cell-phone service, do I even need a cell phone?

5) Is it easy to go to other islands on spare time, is there any spare time on weekends?

Thanks for any input/feedback its greatly appreciated and I look forward to meeting everyone in September!

Hey everyone. I'm 32/m from Louisiana and will be starting at Saba in September 2007. I'd love to meet any of you guys that have been accepted.

User1234- I talked to a friend who just finished at Saba and is about to start his residency. Some of the questions I had for him were similar to yours.

He said that the high-speed internet connection is satellite and about half as fast as the "normal" U.S. connection. He also said that the dorms and liabrary have solid internet connections and they've been upgraded from dial-up to satellite.

From what I gather from the Saba website, cell phones can be bought and used.

Checkout : SABA University - www.saba.edu - international medical university college (http://www.saba.edu/other_faqs.php)

Hope that helps.

Hey there! I just thought I would answer some questions for you. The internet here is a 256 speed, and it cost around 120 a month. If you live in the dorms, it is best to get a wireless router and share it among two rooms. The internet is really slow here. You get used to it eventually though. I am in second semester and still haven't got a car. The locals here are really friendly, and will pick you up most of the time. You can hitch-hike all over the island. Don't worry, you will get good at it by mid-semester. Students are pretty good about giving rides also because they have all had to walk at one time. Alot of people got a car after first semester. An inexpensive car is hard to come by, so I am still saving up! As for rotations in the U.S., I believe you have to provide your own housing for all but one or two locations. I believe the school said that they provide you with a housing list, or maybe the hospital does. I am not positive on this though. There are two cell phone services here on the island. They both seem to work well, it just depends where you are living. I didn't get very good reception in Matthews dorm with one of the cell phone providers. I would recommend you bring an unlocked cell phone from home. When we signed up for internet, they had a package where you got a free cell phone, but I am not sure if they still have that package going on. I don't have a house phone here, so the cell phone is helpful to get ahold of classmates and any local establishments. It is pretty easy to go to other islands. You can hop on the ferry, or most people just take the airplanes because they are much faster. The best time to visit other islands is usually the weekend after a block exam. That way you still have another two weekends to study before the next test. I have yet to venture off The Rock, except to fly back home, so I can't give you any advice as to which island to visit. I hope this helped. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

hi shasha,

well, the one thing that stands out with ross is its high attrition rate...much greater than any other carribean med school...another personal factor is that it is owned (i believe) by Devry, and thus it is run more like a business...i get this feeling every time i call them or they call me and ask me whether or not im going to accept their offer...

large class sizes (400+ students)...i read somewhere on this site (i know not that credible, but take my word on it) that ross lectures are broadcasted internally so that overflow students who can't fit in the lecture halls can view the lecture...

these factors are really important to me, and i want a school that wants its students to succeed by being supportive and challenging...

hope this helps

I've got some material I used from Day 1 that really helped me for inclass exams and Step 1 - I got 258/99.

hey everyone,
just thought I'd throw out an idea. There is a hotel close to the airport called the Turquoise Shell Inn, its so close I walked to the airport from the hotel when I visited in February.

They have a medical student discount which makes the rooms $85 per night. I just reserved a room for the 28th and 29th (just in case my luggage comes in late). If anyone is interested in splitting the cost of a room (2 twin beds and a couch in the entry) let me know. The hotel has twin beds, double beds, couches, but more than 3 people to a room would be crowded. Otherwise, you can get on their website and reserve a room yourself (they have a total of ten) and we'll hang out.

Just thought it might be nice to get to know some of my classmates before we dive into our education. I know we've all been looking forward to this for some time and I'm hoping (and pretty sure) I'm not the only one who is a little anxious/excited about this new place. Friends would be nice.

The hotel backs up to the Simpson Bay beach and is owned by a nice retired optometrist from KC. He's so awesome that when I went over to Saba after staying one night at his hotel, I left my liquor in the frig in the room since I couldn't take it on the plane. When I came back to St. Maarten, I found it in my new room, chilled and ready to go (thats cool). On top of that, at last minute he gave me a full refund on my last night because I had to leave early to get to an unexpected funeral back in the States.

hope to get some responses. See you all in September.

i don't know if this has been addressed, but I'd come here ~5 days early. Some people closer to the start of classes, but you get to know a lot of people and the island when you come a little earlier.

hey juice

I'm feeling much the same way you are, and normally would be up for splitting the room, but... I've already got all of my flight plans booked and everything, im actualy going through boston, then miami, spending the night (29th) in miami, and getting to saba the evening of the 30th - so i won't be able to make those days in st. maarten

But, if you're up for getting together and doing something (or just seeing what all there is to do) on Saba, I'd be up for that. Like you said, friends would be nice.

Same offer goes out to anyone just starting up this september!

Hey Dharma

Just wondering what negative things you heard about Ross. I recently went to SGU, Ross, and AUC's informational sessions. @ Ross the only thing is that it seemed to be harder in the sense that they weed people out.

Thanks!

Hi Dharma,

All three of those schools are fine. I am told that SGU is the best of the three, but I don't know from personal experience. However, You are posting this on a Saba Forum... so most of the people on this forum will know more about Saba than the other three schools.

Saba is dramatically less expensive than all three of those schools. In some cases as much as $100,000 less expensive.

Any one of those four schools (SGU, AUC, Ross or Saba) will get you an MD if you work hard.

Good Luck!
