i was wondering whether ppl apply for both categorical and preliminary positions (for Surgery) in the same hospital, during matching????..... is it a good idea????....
i have done a lot of research and usually anyone who is in interested in surgery and wants to apply - both categorical and preliminary spot should rank all the categorical spots on the top of the ranking list whereas, the preliminary spots towards the bottom....
seems like a lot of ppl from SGU (match 2006) got preliminary spots... do u guys think that these candidates got a preliminary spot from the matching or they had to scramble for these spots???....
any input would be really appreciated...

many people do a prelim for surgical subs, so they may haved taken the prelim for that and not because they are looking for gen surg.

I'm bouncing this to the top again because i know its a question many people have. I have a friend of mine who is applying for surgery this year and is going all-categorical with IM as a back up. Not applying to any prelim spots at all. I don't know how i feel about that, but its not me. One must ask how the IM program will interpret someone whose focus is really surgery and not IM.
