Hi im thinking of applying to study med at sgu but i have no idea about the obstacles to qualifying there,..i read on the website 90% of students that start go on to finish but what happend to the other 10 %,why did they fail? was there some particualry difficult exam the couldnt do or did they just decide it was a wrong choice? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.;)

that's the attrition rate.. i mean what's the attrition rate at US medical schools? I am sure it's just as high or low as other medical schools. The reason that it's 90% is because medical school is hard.. people don't realize this till they actually have to take a test in medical school. I have plenty of friends who were in medical school before me and they kept telling me how hard it was, and I never really believed them since I never studied in undergrad I thought I could get by on little studying in med school as well but here i have to study everyday, it's totally different. so yes, people fail out, some feel like this is too much work and drop out on their own, others don't feel like spending 2 years in another country away from their family and friends and drop out after a semester. And some although very few transfer to US schools. So there are many reasons why only 90% finish, look at attrition rates of other schools I am sure most are in the 90's, it's not unusual. There is no one subject that is the killer for most people, and each semester has their own hard subjects, so you can't just say if you pass this class the rest of medical school is easy. It gets harder and harder every semester, I don't think it will ever be ease to be honest. But don't worry if you really want to be a doc and are willing to work for it you will be ok.

Ah so true although I didn't think I could get by on a "little studying". I knew it would be a lot more than I'd ever done before but the reality was way worse than anything I'd imagined.

Medical school (up to the point I'm at) is not hard. Once you can do a little bit of deductive reasoning you're good to go as, in my opinion, there's no really difficult material. It's the volume that's immense and a killer!!

Obviously it is going to be different for everyone, but maybe some of the current SGU students can post what their typical day is like from the time they wake up till the time they go to bed. Add in where you go and what you do for mental downtime. I think it may be helpful to the students who are just starting to look into medical or veterinary school.

I don't think anyone needs to know how much time I spend downloading and looking at porn.

the amount of studying you do a day depends on what term you're. some terms have less work than other or are scheduled better so you have more time to study or do other things. but usually people study probably around 4 hours a day. during exam times like a week or two before exams start I study a lot more probably about double of what I study if the exam is in a month or so, and there are plenty of days where I just can't get myself to study. You basically just need to keep up with the material. so if you can cover what was covered in class that day in 2 hours you study for two hours if you need more time you study more, or you can take the day off and catch up the next day, but keeping up with the material is key. it's almost impossible to catch up if you're more than a week behind.

the materials in med school isnt "hard" , its just the volume of materials to know and understand is immense.

as far as how much studying, well that depends on which term.
in term 1 which is basically bulkk memorizing materials i spent about 5-6 hrs/day on weekdays and on weekends probably double that sometimes, especially during exam times. but there will be day when i do a lot less than that becase i just cant get into a mood to study.

in term 2, its more concept based and less memorization, so far i am grasping all the concepts very easily thus i am not spending as much time studying to understand these concepts.

ppl in term 2 and above can comment on those terms

I think the amount of studying you will need to do is really quite variable from person to person. I personally just go to class/labs/etc.. and try to absorb as much as possible and then bust my butt the week before exams and that works for me. I wish I had the discipline to come home after lecture and study for a few hours but I don't. You will find other people that practically live in the library with their noses in books for 10 hours a day outside of class and that's what they need to do to get by. Bottom line is, you'll have to find out what works for you but if you get accepted then you probably have the capability to get by as long as you have the will and determination.
