Hi, (first time posting, hope i'm not breaking any rules)
I'm looking for some advice from anyone at (who knows about) the 2nd faculty in prague, specifically U.K students.

Why is the entrance procedure so easy....is it because there is a low quality of education or do they have a big drop out rate?

How is the quality of life/education there? It must be quite a small community, is there much mixing with students from other faculties?

Importantly, what do you guys think options would be for returning to the U.K afterwards?
This is because (after speaking to many people) I'm guessing the recent developments/competition in F1/F2 training would make it difficult for a European graduate (despite being a U.K citizen) to get a place.
Is there anyone applying to the foundation training from prague? What is the ease of this at the moment? (i know it can change in 6 years)
Is it possible to go into Australia/New zealand or Ireland after graduation?
(returning to the U.K afterwards)
Are transfers to U.K Med schools possible, do you know anyone who has done this?

I'd really appreciate any advice,
Some specific to prague but going back the the uk is a big question also!

Why is the entrance procedure so easy....is it because there is a low quality of education or do they have a big drop out rate? These courses exist to generate revenue for the university and therefore have an interest in enrolling as many students as they can. The difficulty/ease of the entrance procedure is just a measure of demand for places, not an indicator of the quality of the course. For example, 20 years ago CCC at A level was good enough for a place at medical school in the UK.

I'm guessing the recent developments/competition in F1/F2 training would make it difficult for a European graduate (despite being a U.K citizen) to get a place. My gut feeling is that the Foundation changes will make it harder for non UK graduates by limiting the availability of F2 posts for direct entry in the future. Whether you are eligible for F1 or F2 entry depends on whether you have provisional or limited/full GMC registration. You would be best to get specific advice from the GMC, but currently I think Czech Republic graduates get full registration and therefore would apply directly for F2 posts. However it's important to remember that MMC is new and a lot can change in 6 years.

thanks for the reply,

I've checked with the GMC and they do say that as it stands graduates from Charles Uni are 'Eligible' to apply for F2!

My worry is along the lines of becoming an unemployed doctor! I know that some med students in the U.K are worrying about the getting there choices of F1/F2 places and the 'fierce competition' (GMC) in specialisation....European grads are gonna are basically gambling then!
Whats anyone's ideas/info on this?

The GMC has stated that all graduates of UK medical schools are guaranteed a place on Foundation training, the main complaint seems to be that this is not necessarily in the same area they went to medical school. This has caused anger among some students (particularly in London) who made their choice of medical school on the basis that they would be doing their PRHO year there too.

I can't find the link now, but I did have some information on number of applicants per place for specialist training and while there is "fierce competition" in some areas, it all depends on what you want to do. Cardiothoracic surgery is always going to be much harder to get into than histopathology for example.

You can't really predict what the labour market will be like in 6 years time, particularly with the new training regimen being so new, so don't worry too much about it.

The entrance procedure to Charles is not always as easy as people say. Some people do fail to gain entry.

Also most other schools in the region do not have an entrance procedure.

How is the quality of life/education there? It must be quite a small community, is there much mixing with students from other faculties?

Very good. The community here is not small (well I don't think so). Much mixing between students of different faculties. I think the best way to answer these sort of questions is to come and check it out yourself.

Importantly, what do you guys think options would be for returning to the U.K afterwards?

I know of one grauate who applied and got a SHO post. In terms of getting a job back in the UK, well I know that thousands of doctors and nurses from the new EU countries are working in England. At the end of the day if you become a good doctor then you will have nothing to worry about.

Is it possible to go into Australia/New zealand or Ireland after graduation?
(returning to the U.K afterwards)
Yes it is. The same goes for most medical schools in the region. But my understanding is that Ireland is quite competitive and for New Zealand and Australia you may have to do additional exams.

Are transfers to U.K Med schools possible, do you know anyone who has done this?

Nope. But I know some students got accepted to the 1st year and simply started again.

As it stands, do UK citizens graduating from an EEA member state medical school get priority over non UK citizens graduating from the EU/abroad? (With rgds. obtaining F1/2 posts).
