Just a FYI for those who are applying solely to EM programs...don't be freaking out by this thread because interviews are rolling in from programs. Most EM programs won't offer programs until November, unless you've really got a STELLAR application, and have all your EM SLORs in and your EM grade(s) in.
Just a FYI...I can hear people sharding from miles away by reading this post...lol....

wow, not a good time to become a DMC resident. if the contracts break they don't have to find a place for you. i've read the contracts and it says nothing about what would happen if a program closes so you are on your own. i hope they work it out. i've been to DMC for wayne state lectures and the hospital is not that bad. also the acgme is coming to investigate and if the programs go on probation that is also not good for the residents.
if they don't have a solid resolution to this i would rank wayne state low if at all. i've met a few residents who've had programs close and had to scramble midyear to try and find a spot. one moved all the way from california to detroit and it took them almosta year to find a slot.
they say they are forming contracts with suburban hospitals that is true but many of them aren't even built yet, beumont, providence park, henry ford are all also building new hospitals out west and all will have residents so it may not be as simple for wayne which is a HUGE program compared to providence or beumont and wayne would have alot more residents to place around.

some interviewers ask some don't. i don't know if it was because i was the only img interviewing or not. what do you say? the truth, i got waitlisted and didn't want to do another application cycle and my undergrad gpa was borderline then let the usmle scores do the rest.
i was surpeised by a few of the interviewers saying they were also borderline or waitlisted and considered sgu and auc...one actually went to auc and was ready to start when he got in stateside so they are well aware of the big carib schools.

Congrats! The waiting game definitely sucks. You sit back and wonder if schools are interviewing some folks and waiting to see if they need to offer you an interview, how many interviews they have already done, how many more interviews they will offer, and if they will even contact you. I wonder how many programs never respond either way to applicants. You'd hope all programs would be respectful enough to contact you regardless of an interview offer vs. rejection because the waiting game is the worst part.

it all depends on individual programs...
your application may be held in a 'hold' pile...so when others cancel interviews, they'll go through the 'hold' pile and offer those applicants interviews.
Some programs also are just late in offering interviews.
Depends on the specialty, the program, and the application.
I know...that doesn't really help...
I've been hearing back more and more after Nov. 1st, and a few before nov. 1st. This second full week of Nov. should be pretty busy with invites/rejections...at least for EM.

EM starts after MSPE, primary care seems to be the opposite. At least that's what I've been sensing. Most places have filled their quotas and are now just either rejecting or telling me they are full after u call them. I've only gotten a few after nov 1st.

Can anyone explain the significance of the MSPE in relation to getting an interview?
I'm kind of confused about the subject. From what I'm getting as a first impression is that residencies are reluctant to give interviews to people who's MSPE's aren't released. However, the MSPE's aren't released until peak interview season.
I'd like some clarification so I have no preconceptions.
Thanks.

No, because you didn't discuss how or why the school releases the MSPE on a specific date.

No, because you didn't discuss how or why the school releases the MSPE on a specific date.
How:
MSPE gets written up by the school, the letter gets sent to ECFMG who will scan it and then upload it to ERAS. ERAS then accepts the document but doesn't allow programs to download it until Nov 1st.
Why:
Why is a manhole cover round? ;)

a man hole cover is round to prevent it from falling back into the hole. there is a smaller circular lip that the cover sits on, it is physically impossabe to fit it back in the hole.

yep.....and that no matter what angle someone dropped the cover it would never be in a position to go into the hole.....being round also helps rolling it to move it

And a round manhole cover looks great in a movie when there is an explosion because the cover can flip around and around live a coin.

just got back from hell week and it was tiring. all interviews so far have been benign and i am having a hard time ranking them... i got 2 more last week along with 3 rejections...again oddly enough it is the community programs that are rejecting and academic centers that are interviewing me so i don't know what to make of it.... the academic centers have more ammenities for the residents, like all of the centers had robotic surgery with davinci which i am interested in and dedicated patient simulators in laparoscopy and even a live animal lab where you practice laps.....
also to everyone who thinks all schools are the same and don't matter think again. about half of my program director interviewers asked why i went to the carib and a few commented on the quality of the big 3 down there in the last 10 years because they either knew grads/residents from these schools or they themselves graduated from there. also contrary to 'popular' belief these guys knolw what is going on down there and i was surprised by some of the things i was told....
one of them said one of their residents had a spouse in another specialty where they learned about auc and that is the only reason they interviewed me. he said my scores were very competitive and i was more than qualified to interview but they hadn't really interviewed anyone from the carib. i was the only img there and the name cards had our names and our schools so i got asked a ton of questions.
anyway just know that so far we are well represented by grads from ross, sgu, and auc that have left their mark on these programs making it easier for us to get a foot in the interview door.

This is definitely a very popular question. My husband transferred from AUC to a U.S. school and he had several physicians ask him why he went to the Carib, and he's only been on two interviews thus far.
the cheif resident at the LSU-BR EM program is an AUC graduate.

Not really. I'm done with 10 programs; I'll probably rank 8.

So, you're only going to rank 5 out of 12 places you interviewed? Were the programs that horrible that you figured you'd be better off scrambling than matching at those 7 programs? Are the 5 OB/GYN or FM programs?
AUCMD2006
01-08-2007, 10:35 PM
no they were all except 2 really good. i don't think i need to rank more than 3, figured 5 is 'safe' but you know me when time comes to actually do it i'l probablky throw all 12 on there.....

I'm sure your wife would agree better safe than sorry. J- is planning on ranking all programs he interviewed at except for any he really doesn't like and would rather scramble than go there.
