hi guyz, I was wondering if u have any idea about the admission policy at the UTAS, I am a canadian high school grad with an avarage of 86% and i applied to UTAS 5 or 6 years med program, they told me that all papers were complete; not missing any documents and also they said that i meet the entry requierments. do u have any idea of my chances getting in that Uni?

I appreciate your answers

Thanks

First round of admissions go out on September 21st, 2006 for the new 5 year MBBS program. Since you are Canadian, they take your top 6 high school grades in your final year and average them. In the top 6, they include the prerequisite marks, i.e. Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. If you have more than one math they take the higher grade. If you meet the minimum requirements then your whole application gets considered. They rank you based on academics and if you're high enough, the top 50 or so applicants, get separated on the quality of their personal statement. There have been a total of 200-250 applicants that meet the minimum requirements hoping to get one of the 20 spots available for international students.

Here's a thread with more information: Welcome to the University of Tasmania Medical School forum! (http://www.newmediamedicine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22144)

Good luck on September 21st!!!!!

Don't feel discouraged. Are you finishing high school in the Ukraine? On their website it said that minimum requirements for Canadians is 80% average and your 86% is well above that! Anything can happen, you're still in the game.

but you're already in med school and they do consider your university grades too. Just make sure you have a 70 average in tertiary studies, which is a requirement for people who already started university.

The only other Aussie schools I looked into are the graduate entry ones and it seems like getting into ANY Aussie school is becoming more and more competitive.

Last year there were 3 canadians who went to UTAS.

How many more years until you're done?

well now iam at 2nd year so another 4 more to go, but i dont think australia will consider ukrainian med education cause it sucks lol especially in english and all have little experience in english. in fact i didnt even write that i was in ukraine to begin with even in my statement cause i thought it would make it harder for me to get in; they might say that i already go to a med school, why not give his chance to someone else who has not been to a med school. anyways, i am really scared lol i really wanna go in man.

Congrats on your offer!

Are you currently taking tertiary or high school courses? A conditional offer usually means that you're accepted BUT you have some pre-requisites to complete before we can actually let you in. Under the British A-level system people who are still in high school give predicted grades and then send in their actual grades later. You might have predicted an AAA but actually got AAB but the conditional offer was AAB so you're stil in.

I didn't know that UTAS gave out conditional offers. What exactly did the letter say?

University of Tasmania is one of the hardest medicals schools to get into in Australia. The other is the University of Newcastle.

UTAS got even more competitive this year because they recently switched to the 5 year program. The requirements on their website might not seem as stiff but I think it's the only med school in Australia (could somebody please verify this?) that require physics as a prerequisite. Our 2007 entry class will have around 120 people total. Small class sizes are higly desired by many. Plus it's fairly cheap to live in Tasmania and they lock in your tuition! This means that when you sign the acceptance contract, your tution doesn't increase year after year like at most universities!

There were around 400 total international applicants this year but only 20 spots available. There was no interview required but you had to write a kick a** personal statement. I know people who had 90+ averages and didn't get in. This year, there was no application fee. However, they changed that for 2008. I think it's $100.

Few of us in Taylor's College, Malaysia get it. I thought melb and unsw will be much harder to get in?

I didt get newcastle though.

Just hope that my TER will be sufficient.

Near TER99 in forecast...

O, do you mean more people actually prefer a 5 yr program? I dont really check on its requirements, but yes, both physics and chemistry are really important. I have a friend currently studying first year in UTAS who said the living cost in Tas is comparable to Melb...maybe because of shipping cost?

I consider myself really lucky to get the conditional offer. However i do not know what the requirements are. I am studying SAM. Do you know what TER they want? Yes, its free this year. $100 is a lot here...
