Does anyone know if we should bring all of our equiptment (like stetescope, pocket books, pda) on our first day at Union Memorial Hospital? Or do we just have to bring our Immunization Record and a notebook to take notes?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

you're evil.....you always know who the students who are just starting.....every pocket is filled with something "useful" and their lab coat weight 65 lbs.....then as you go thru rotations you realize you dont need to carry anything except maybe 1 pocket book and you can bum all the cool supplies off those just starting

pulses are equal... equally absent if it was bilateral BKA AKA
brain1navat, congrats on starting clinicals. I did a lot of my rotations at Union Memorial, and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it there. Everyone was friendly and there was a lot of individualized teaching.
If you're just kicking off your clinical years, I'd suggest carrying a stethoscope, pen light, hammer, your pda (or small books like a pocket drug guide, medicine book, and a maxwell's), black ink pens, trauma shears (more for surgery), tuning fork (more for neuro), and anything else you think an attending might ask to borrow during walking rounds. It's always good to start off by being overprepared and making a good impression. You'll probably cut down on the stuff you carry over time, like my colleagues stated above.
I'm at St. Agnes on one of my last electives, but live close to Union. Let me know if you've got any more questions about the hospital or the area.

Hello Folks!
I am scheduled to start at St. Agnes on Dec. 4th for Internal Medicine, followed by Surgery. I probably will have a million questions!
To start, what do students wear during the Surgery rotation - scrubs or street clothes and lab jacket?? If we wear scrubs, any particular color?? I assume we wear street clothes and a lab jacket for Internal Medicine.
As far as housing goes, does anyone have any special advice?
Any other helpful suggestions to get started???
I still haven't decided on a PDA vs. carrying some small pocket books!
Anyone else starting at St. Agnes on Dec. 4th????
:D :D :D :p :p :p

I would rather see a ACA. (The C is for Chest)

I'm at St. Agnes now on an elective rotation, but will be long gone (and done with school) by Dec. 4th. During surgery you're going to wear scrubs and your labcoat, and the scrubs will be provided. During medicine, it's street clothes (by street, I mean smart professional, leave the Rocawear at home) and your labcoat.
As far as housing goes, get on craigslist and check out what's available. Yahoo/Google maps to orient yourself to the area before you arrive. I know the students doing IM/Surgery now, so I can find out when they're moving out and post back if any of them have apartments that will become available.
One helpful suggestion would be to maximize your use of the search feature on the thread to find info already posted in the past. Good luck!
