A patient with congestive heart failure has a pulmonary edema your med student says thats easy I will just give him manitol.

Is he correct?
If yes or no why?

No, you don't give a Pt with CHF and pulmonary edema Mannitol,because it is an osmotic diuretic and sucks the fluids out of the cells int othe circulation.You already have hypervolemia in CHF,sowhat you need is to get rid of the fluids in the circulation in a timely manner(b/c mannitol is slow).BTW it is contraindicated in CHF and in Pulm.edema.

he should take ACEI & BB AND ADRUG to reaf the edema

In what part of the nephron is that manitol works?

Mannitol is working on the whole tubule in the nephron.

manitol works in pct
