So here in Colorado the things I enjoy most(besides molecular biology of course) are mountaineering and Brazillian Jiu jitsu. I have been dreaming of climbing some of the bigger mountains in South America like Aconcagua or cotopaxi, or chimborazo, or...well the list could go on for infinity.I also have been meaning to take the trip that all good jiu jitsu students make to go an train at the Baja Tijuca school in Rio de janeiro. I was looking at a map of the carib and was surprised to see how close to venezuela we are. So Im wondering if anyone has flown from the carib to Ecuador/peru or Brazil. I figure that we have two week breaks and its closer to fly south and have a REAL vacation rather than flying all the way back to Colorado. So has anyone tried this. I have ha limited luck finding flights south from puerto rico. They all seem to leave from Miami.

Also does anyone else climb or dig Brazillian Jiu jitsu(gracie Jiu jitsu). Are there any type of mats on saba. I tell you grappling is by far the most efficient way to exercise. You grapple for a half hour and you felt liek you just ran a marathon. We need to be efficient with our time right?

I'm for Baja Tijuca. I have no idea what it is, but it's fun to say. Kinda like "chimichanga". :)
I haven't seen anybody doing any martial arts on Saba, though that would be cool.
I wonder if this thread will get moved to the relaxing lounge...

Wolfie,

Not going to be moved at all... as long as it deals with martial arts classes/groups on Saba.

Baja Tijuca is an area in Rio de Janeiro, where the Gracie family is from. Brazillian jiu jitsu has several different rival schools that have evolved subtle differences in the techniques that they employ. The "Baja" style is very different than their rival the "carlson gracie team". Sorry this doesnt have much to do with saba, but once Im down on the island Im planning on trying to get some of my fellow students together and teaching a bit of jiu jitsu. I know thedirtychemist should be interested as he has a black belt (in keepin it real):) Here is a link on jiu jitsu for anyone interested

Oh boy! Look who's a moderator now.... Ducman!

I don't know how you get moved up like that, but I can tell you there is a slim to none chance that I will ever be a moderator. Well at least he (possibly) will cut me some slack on my posts, since most of them are humorous and have nothing to do with either the education or other real issues about the school. But at least I can enlighten on the quirks of the island.

Also- this just in: Motorcycle are dangerous.

I know that alot of the guys (and girl) that have them here don't have alot of two wheeled time under their belts, but uh.... this probably isn't the place to learn. Another student had his like 6th accident over the weekend, and first really bad one. Unlike me, he was wearing not much beyond flip flops for protective gear. So I'm going to enter a plea and tell everyone that rides here, or is thinking about it to get a jacket and gloves, and a full face helmet for god's sake. It really saved me and I bet the other student wishes he had one on.

Ducman, as a fellow motocyclista, please back me up.

Nate-MD,

You know I've been backing you since 1st semester.

But, I've only had a car plow into the back of me on the highway... not vice versa.

I do have to give you some credit... atleast the firetruck was not parked!!

Wait a second... you are referring to a motorcycle... did you get a bike on the island... or are we still talking about the scooter incidents!?!

How was the break?

Later,

Mickey

Ducman: I wheelied a dirt bike over backwards during break. I had a moment of, "Oh F.... here we go again...." But as I fell softly into the high grass, instead of hearing the shattering of plastic, popping of knee ligaments, and scraping of metal upon the ground, I only heard the squeals of glee from my friends accompanied by "8 seconds, you only held that for 8 seconds!" I hopped back up and this time, instead of my leg giving out, I picked the bike back up and rode off into the sunset.... accompanied by a cloud of smoke because the damn thing had sucked up an insane ammount of oil when I flipped it.

Yes, I'm still nuts.... and no I didn't really learn my lesson. I mean come on, a fire truck? Freak luck. Now watch me T-boned by a cop when I go back home.

"Take a look at what I'm wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? Forget about it! Last off, my students will learn about self respect. You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to Starla at night? Forget about it!"

Not only am I dizzy from zooming around the world on google earth, but now Wolfgangs post has me giggling like a little girl.

Instead of working on my presentation on anal fissures I decided to draw a rendering of my accident on the corner that it happened on. The only thing is that in this image it doesn't look like a blind corner. I assure you it is, and if there are any doubters, I will take you to the corner personally and have Cuchi barrel down on you with his dump truck and see if you don't soil yourselves.

Oh, and when you're picking a topic for Clin Med, don't do anal fissures. You won't believe the ammount of porn you pull up in your image searches. I'm sure I'm getting called into admin tomorrow to explain myself. Plus all the first sems sittting around me are looking at me funny.
