Hi,

I am starting to consider schools in Israel (thinking of applying) but I am not sure where I Can find more info? I have searched some of their websites (school's) but they are not very detailed.

(my GPA - 3.70 / MCAT - 29) --> Am I competitive in that regard?

Also, how is their match rate? I can't seem to find it? And I am a Canadian so I was wondering if there is a match rate for Canadian students as well?

How do these school's compare to the Carib schools (i.e. SGU or Ross? )

Sorry for all these questions, any information would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Ben Gurion's web site states that the averages are 3.50/29 MCAT, so I'd say you're right there in terms of being competitive with their stats. I don't know about the other schools, but I'd guess they're probably somewhat close, maybe a little more competitive for Sackler and a little less for Technion, just based on how long those programs have been around. But again, that's just my guess.

I know the schools have very good rep's for getting students into good US residencies, but I have no idea about how they do in Canada.

I am at Sackler, and can tell you the match rate is like 97%, and our class is around 76, which means all but 2 people will match. We have several canadians in our class, more than 2, so I am pretty sure the match thing works out for them.

As for your stats, Sackler is pretty diverse, so you are fine in the grade department. I got in with a slightly less gpa, and a lesser Mcat, but my interview went very well. There are kids here who get into schools like cornell, but cant afford it or would rather not spend 40k a year in tuition.

Sacklers program is very much based on how an American school would be, so if thats your thing, go for it.

As far as comparison to Carib schools... I got into the carib, and chose to come here, and its good living so far (cept the drivers, they are crazy).

Hope that helps.

Hrm ok so I guess its a personal thing mostly. I am applying to American schools now as well but I am not sure how that will go.

My only other problem with Israel is that I used to live there (up to grade 5) and I am not sure if i would have to do military service (I am no longer an Israeli Citizen, Canadian) but still they may have me in their computer.

(only 2 CND eh, not that many...)

The March and the class size look very appealing compare to some Carib schools (95% match and 300 class size..)

There are like 3 canadians I know off that I can think of, there may be a couple more. But still, thats not bad. I dont know many folks. As far as military goes, alot of kids are dual citizens, and the school is good about keeping the military away, so you could always call the school and ask, but Im pretty sure youre fine in that sense.

I am a Canadian and I am going to Technion. your gpa/mcat scores are good enough to get in any of the israeli schools.
if u get into canadian schools, it'd b amazing, but i know how competative they r. so i would recommand u to have US schools as ur second choice. search for schools and make sure that u got the scores for those schools. i recommand american schools over israeli and carb. since i think u can be match more easily if u go to american schools.
i applied to ross and st. george and got accepted, but i chose israel b/c it'd b easier for me to live in israel than in an island.
one of the things that i like ab carb schools is the fact that u do the clinicals in US. i think that's a bonous, b/c u get to know the hospitals, dr... and it might ease up the process of residencies.
as far as i know there are n't that many canadians who do their residencies in canada (from israeli or carb schools).
good luck w/ everything

we have about 6-9 canadians in our class at sackler. and you don't need to worry about the military, they have a special deal with sackler.

Irina:

Don't you do some of your clinicals in American Universities as well (if you go to Technion or any other Israeli Med?)

Or is it just very hard to get? Regardless, from the residency list, it seems like almost everyone gets into good residency... looking at Technion, it seems that most of the residencies are very good (they dont list numbers)but saw some Radiology in there and Plastic Surg (isn't that very hard?) would be nice of course if they post the % of people who got that...

Anyways thanks for the info guys, its helping out!!

I believe it's only lately that they have posted up the residency lists.
You can do only 3 month of your electives in US (this is only for Technion). I am not sure of the other schools. but they all do have some clinicals in US. Technion has the shortest period of time in US.

Sackler has a 4 month period in which you do sub-internships in the US. The Sackler class of 05, matched to:

IM, peds, Radiology, Phys Medicine and Rehab, Psych, General Surgery, ObGyn.

I begin hell in 2 days... oh the joy.

It would be nice to see some numbers tho, i.e. how many matched where...

The class of 05 had 52 kids. Id use the 06 match list, but it was a very very small class. Note some people matched to more than 1 residency. Too lazy to type out all the locations, but an idea: UC Irvine med center, Mt. Sinai Hospital NY, Einstein/Montefiore med center NY, North Shore U - Manhasset NY, Harbor UCLA-CA, Cedars-Sinai Med Ctr, CA, Albany Med ctr , NY, NYU SOM, U Nevada, USC,

Out of the 52

Internal Med - 20
Pediatrics - 13
Psychiatry - 3
General Surgery - 8
Radiology - 4
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - 3
Anesthesiology - 1
OBGYN - 2
Preliminary Medicine - 3
Transitional Year - 1

I think thats it. Hope that helps. In the class of 06, there was an orthopedic match.

No Fam Med? Or Internal Med?

Internal med is the first thing on the list , 20 kids matched to it.

Didnt see any family practice, but Im positive they could get that if they wanted to, since people matched to more competitive specialties.

the orthopedic surgery kid who placed in the sackler 06 class had a connection... he wasn't even near the top of that class

Yup, well.. he made a connection by working all 16 weeks doing the same sub-i at the program he got accepted to, but yeh, not top of the class.

I am more interested in Rad or Path...

I know I may change my mind later, of course, but those 2 mainly because I still wanna do research..
