hey everyone. so i'm starting up here this week, and want to buy the most efficient device (electronic, non-electronic) to have when doing my rotations. What is everyone using for their journals? thanks

Your journals? As in writing in your diary or as in medical journals? If its the latter, there are computers in most hospitals. Often you can find them in the library if one is not available on the floors. Some will hopefully allow free access to Uptodate.com and MDconsult.com. You certainly don't need a PDA or Palm, although many find them useful. Save your $ for residency when they usually either give you one for free or reimburse you for one you buy.

although your name is dr. nick... i do respect your reply. so i should just keep a notebook or pencil pad handy to keep notes then type them out on a computer. no problem there. thanks for the help

Actually, i do exactly that. I just wasn't clear in what your post was asking. I have a tiny notbook i keep in my breast pocket along with my Maxwell. use that notebook as my "to do" list and to write down topics to look up later. I cross off things i have delt with and tear out pages when i'm finished with everything on it. I usually go through one of these per rotation. I have a larger notebook (about the size of my hand) that i keep in my larger coat pocket. That is where i take notes during lectures or teaching sessions (i.e. rounds). It stays a little more organized. Also, i go through about one of those per rotation (its fat). Ideally i should type out these notes and i have done quite a bit of that, but somehow time seems to get the better of me by the end of the rotation.

Thanks for the respect. But don't give me respect just because "dr" is part of my handle. I'm not a doctor yet, although i will be one in 2007 (hence the meaning of my handle). I don't think my ego has become so inflated that it can't withstand criticism (or even rejection from the female community). Besides, i think most of my life i have been misunderstood (or maybe its me who misunderstands?)

Perhaps I'm being ignorant but what "journal" are you talking about? I'm aware of the blue card that we use to track the patients but I'm not aware of any other journal that we're required (?) to have.
