A 59-year-old woman complains of fatigue and a "burning" pain on her scalp for the 2 previous days. Her temperature is 38 degrees C (100.4F). Physical examination indicates her pain is localized to the left parietal-occipital scalp, and extends down to include the skin of the left side of her neck. She denies any recent rash in the area, headaches, mental status changes, or recent infections.

1. Which sensory nerve root is implicated in this patient's condition?
2. What laboratory process can be used to help to detect the presence of a suspected pathogen's genome in a sample?
3. Four days later, the patient develops an erythematous vesicular rash in the same area (see figure above). What are the likely findings on histologic examination of these vesicles?
4. What treatments are most appropriate for this condition?
5. Could a vaccine have prevented this? And what type of vaccine is it, and what branches of the immune system does it stimulate?
