In the month of January, a 2-year-old girl is brought to her pediatrician by her parents b/c of a 3-day history of watery, nonbloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Physical examination reveals the child is slightly tachycardic, and has sunken eyes and poor skin turgor.
1. What is the most likely diagnosi?
2. How does the micro-organism cause illness?
3. Describe the characteristics of this micro-organism.
4. How is this condition diagnoses, and how is it treated?
5. In what age group is this condition usually seen?
1. Rotavirus--most common seen in children

3. RNA, single-strand, naked iscosahedral, positive sense..; is part of the reovirus family (might have gotten rotavirus and reovirus confused)...
4. stool sample, and oral hydration (pedialyte) & IV fluids may be necessary
5. want to say after at least one year.. child will have some immune protection from mom especially if breast fed (IgA)
