Wondering about bringing my fly rod to Saba. Any fly fishermen on saba?

I would not bring down a nice pole. I used an inexpensive pole. The fishing on Saba from the shore is treacherous due to rocks. At best during the day you catch small redfish. The best fishing we did was for sharks and barracuda just below the end of the runway, and for tarpon at Ft Bay at night. Also some sharks there at night. The tarpon are 5-6 ft long and school right into the bay. Very fun fight. You will want long steel leaders due to sharp teeth.
The best bet for fishing is to hook up with one of the local fishermen with a boat and go out with them.
Have fun,
Mike

If you're a real fisherman, you'd snatch up the shark and barracuda with your bare hands and eat it raw.

Just curious if people are catching these on the fly. If so are they using monster streamers? I cant imagine my 5 weight Sage is going to be strong enough for a shark. I have a 10 weight loomis though with a sweet Ross Reel.....

Actually I already applied, waiting for call back for interview.
This is the best thread I've seen on fishing.
Do the tarpon school there all year round?
My wife and kids want to know, is swimming also treacherous, any decent places to get in and out of the water??
THANKS MUCH.

I use 30 lb braided line with steel leaders and I still crap myself every time I get a fish on it. They can still bite through/cut with **** plates through like 60 lb. monofilament. As far as bait goes, I've used spinners, rubber squid, real squid, spoons, raw chicken.... really anything. The big thing is get a pole that can handle it, and one that breaks down hopefully, just for transportation sake. Yea, if you're used to bass fishing, you're going to lay a streak in your pants the first time you hook a horse eyed jack or tarpon.

Hey, sorry I am "trespassing" but I am on the redneck island about 10 miles from you guys; statia.
Fly rods don't work for crap. Best luck we have had by far is using old marlin rod/reel set ups with piano wire leaders on 100lb test. We usually bring in 4-5 foot sharks using squid.
We also catch tuna, moray eels, grouper, sun fish (dunno what they are really but we call them sun fish), oh and we dive for lobster sometimes as well.
By far the best time to fish is between 23:00 and 04:00.
Open invite to you guys if you wanna come over and fish with us on an off weekend.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies guys. I am looking forward to Tarpon and Jacks. I grew up in So Cal, catching yellow fin, bluefin, big eye, yellowtail, barracuda, etc. even caught a 6 foot or so sailfish (which was the most boring of all) in Cabo.
I LOVE FISHING.
Planning to bring my penn conventional gear, and a short tuna rod with a flexible tip for casting jigs or bait rigs. Sounds like the fish are a lot hungrier than they are when you go out on a charter or party boat for Tuna, Dorado, etc. You have to use 15-20 lb. test with no leader to just to get hooked up often, that's on 30-50 lb fish.
Nice thing is when your 15lb test slices right through the guy next to you's 30-40 lb test and you get to keep your fish as your tanlging up with all the bozo's and drunks.
It doesnt' sound like there'd be much tangling down there.
DO TARPON REQUIRE A STEEL LEADER, LIKE BARRACUDA, BECAUSE OF THEIR TEETH? OR IS it THEIR JUMPING AND TWISTING?
Thanks for invite countryboy. I am going to be on Nevis, I have no idea, but I'd imagine the fishing there may be similar?
BEST OF LUCK AT SCHOOL.

The steel leader for tarpon fishing is for teeth and for their jumping up out of the water and thrashing. Fun fish to catch. I can't remember when they run. I used large silver rattletraps to catch them.
Have fun!
Mike
