I got my assignment, I am in Matthew's room number 11. Does anyone know if that room is located of the 3 rows in the center or the sides? Also is there any big differences between Hillside and Matthew's dorm on living condition wise, as in the quality of living?

there's a huge difference b/w hillside and mathews......don't worry, you'll find out when you get there....but the people who lived in matthews seemed to like it in the end.

from the way Matthews is described, having a room in Matthews seems pretty nice, but it still seems like people have issues with Matthews. What are the good and bad things about Matthews dorm?

Dunno about the inside, but it looked like it could use a coat of paint from the outside.

I've heard that Matthews has a nice communal area (like a patio gathering area or something?) which was a huge draw for me. I ended up going with Hillside for other reasons - but it would be nice to have a tight knit relationship between the people in the dorms. Also great for getting to know people and studying. I hope the same ends up happening at Hillside - but we'll see! :)

I'm glad I chose Matthew's last semester. It has an awesome patio, and I really loved the people who lived there.

My one word of advice is to bring two essentials with you.
1. Earplugs (I loved my roommie last semester but he both snored and talked in his sleep)
2. Bug Spray (about half of the dorm seemed to have a mosquito problem)

That being said I'm still very glad I chose Matthew's. People in Matthew's were awesome and people tend to hang out in each others rooms more often then in Hillside where everyone tends to stay in there room.

Regardless it depends on the individual. My advice is to get out there and meet your classmates.

it's both illegal and a bad idea to transport bug spray on an airplane. And you can buy BOP at My Store (and every other store on the island).

A recommendation for anyone that will be occupying a matthew's dorm. I'm saying this as seriously as possible - do NOT complain about anything wrong or you will pay the price one way or another. Ask a classmate who complained about a doorknob not working properly - "K" simply removed it for the rest of the semester. "K" also owns about the only "public" laundry service on the island (right below Matthew's dorm). Unless your sem2-5 place has laundry, you will be carting it down to the aforementioned "K's" place. You don't want to be permanently banned.

I agree- don't complain. Complaining doesn't get you far and makes you look like a cry baby. However, if you do have an inquiry, approach your landlord with kindness and a well-mannered tone.

"This doorknob has been broken for a while now and no one has yet to fix it after I have mentioned it to Mr. Whoever!"

vs.

"Hey...the broken doorknob has been a bit of a bother... I was really hoping that we can get fixed soon. Do you think we can take care of that sometime?" "Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it."

Just remember that this is another country and things work here very differently.
