Hi

I had a few questions regarding the KMC Twinning program.

I am studying in 2 year Health Studies at University of Waterloo, Canada and had some questions regarding the KMC Twining Program. I wanted to know if I can apply to that program and whether my 2 years of studies will be credited or not. Do I enter the Pre med program or the Basic Science program? Also how many years will it take to graduate and with which degree will I be graduating with. Is it MBBS or MD? As well, is the program well recognized? Can I practice with the degree in Canada?

Or is it better to study in Canada itself?

Thank you
Heli

I am a current student in the twinning program, but I'm based in Manipal, not Antigua. Please note, there is a HUGE difference between KMC and KMC International Center (KMCIC). KMCIC is the school that is affiliated w/ AUA, and you acquire an MD degree by doing two years of pre-med (which you may opt out of if you have completed 90 units of pre-med requirements), 2 years of basic sciences, and then 2.5 years of clinical rotations here in the U.S. You also have the option of transferring to Antigua after completing the pre-med requirements in Manipal. Also, KMCIC is NOT MCI accredited (medical council of india), and is also not accredited in all 50 states (california for sure, i believe texas and north dakota are the other two that do not recognize KMCIC but i'm not certain on that). A student in KMC on the other hand, is MCI accredited, and is recognized in most states, including Cali. MCI accreditation isn't that big of a deal for us Americans however, since the whole point of us joining the twinning program is to be able to practice here in the United States/Canada. Also, KMC provides students w/ an MBBS degrees, as opposed to an MD.

Anyway, hope this helps :) let me know if you have any other questions...

Hey,
I'm a U.S citizen living in India...How tough is it to get into the twinning program?
What grades do they expect?

you are actually the first i've come across that's a US Citizen in India. If you're trying to stay here in India, I suggest you apply to KMC. If you're wanting to go back to the states, then go for KMC IC. As far as application/admittance? I believe you need a 3.0, but I can double check that for you.

If you have some respectable science course work done and a competitive overall record your odds of acceptance should be okay. This program is still pretty small. So there are plenty of seats. In another year or two we might have to instill a waiting-list. But not right now.

The Application form can be found here: KMCIC (http://www.manipal-kmcic.edu.in/).

Let me know if you have other questions.

thanks....I've done 4 years of physics, chemistry, biology and math in high school...Will that be enough? OR are there more requirements?
They don't take gpa's over here...its more like percentage...and I want to go back to the U.S to practice...I've got both the applications though...

Hello I just wanted to know if it is the same set of loans as for AUA in antigua. Is there any other loan companies I can apply through that wont require a co-signer for kasturba especially because its so established? Thx

KMC is MCI accredited (medical council of india), whereas KMCIC is accredited in the US.

Hi my name is Shikha..I am currently in my first year of undergrad in Canada and am planning to do my M.B.B.S in India. One thing that seems to be bothering me is the difference between KMC and KMCIC. Which would be a better place to go for me? I am planning to come back to the states and settle down there, yet I am not to sure which one would be better for me to go into..KMC? or KMCIC? Many in the past have told me that KMC would be much better, then again a lot of people have suggested that I apply to KMCIC if I wish to come back to the states. If anyone has any suggestions and can help me out, plz do..thanks loads.

I think the differences of KMC and KMCIC are more a matter of priorities and personal motivation.

Priorities:

Do you want to complete Indian licensing requirements in Medical School and eventually practice in India? If so KMC would be a great option for you. Do you want to complete US licensing requirements in Medical School and eventually practice in the US? KMCIC would meet you needs better than KMC.

Personal Motivation:

From what KMCIC students have told me, I don't think any student right out of high school who is still not sure she wants to be a doctor should go to KMCIC. Why? KMCIC is in the middle of rural India 10,000 miles from the US or Canada. If there is a possibility that you will be distracted away from your medical studies, Manipal is not where you should be. KMC's curriculum I imagine gives a little less time for their students to be distracted. Don't know for sure. But this is my impression.

My suggestion is to test your motivation to be a doctor: volunteer in the ER, work for a while in the front office, shadow a doctor on rounds. If everything in you is still pointing you toward medicine it's only a matter of applying yourself to find the right path.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for a fast reply. Well I was born and raised in India, so I'm not really worried about the environment, kind of got used to that. But I did think about it, and yes I am sure that I do want to get into the M.B.B.S program. All that I was confused about is the whole difference between KMC and KMCIC. I do wish to however come back to US, instead of settling down in India. Another question I have for you is that I am planning to apply to Manipal within this week. How does the whole KMCIC system work? As in how is it possible for me to get into that program? Would I have to apply to KMC, and then through KMC apply to KMCIC or is there a whole different procedure to apply to KMCIC specifically. Thank you so much once again, appreciated.

KMC (the MBBS program) and KMCIC (MD program) are entirely different except for being on the same campus and under the umbrella of Manipal University: different application process, different administration, different professors, different degree.

KMCIC is a 6-year MD program: 4 years in Manipal completing the Premed and Basic Science components of Medical School then 2 years in the US completing USMLE Steps 1 & 2 and Clinical Rotations in our affiliated hospitals.

KMCIC's application form is right on the website: Manipal Education (http://www.manipal-kmcic.edu.in)

I was just wondering whether you can still apply to KMC although you have already applied to KMCIC. I would love to practice medicine in India or the United States. Thanks.

It appears you would need to take an entrance exam, and take undergraduate courses in the US to be considered for this.

Tipton,
I was wondering where exactly I should apply for the medical 6 year twinning program in Manipal. If you could gve me the link it would be really helpful. I started filling out one that I found online, but it was really vague. Like, what exactly should I write for the personal statement?
Thanks...

Online Application: https://www.auamed.org/app/OnlineAppLogin.php

Personal Statement should be a brief description of you: how your interest in medicine developed, what experiences you have had in this process, and academic information you think is pertinent, anything else you think we should know. No less than 500 words and/or 1 1/2 pages.
