Does anybody know which states allow you to
start moonlighting after a year of resi.
if you need an unrestricted license , then there are VERY FEW states. I think there is one
BUT many residency programs allow you to moonlight within the framework of your residency program. this does not require an unrestricted license.
IMO, unless you are a true FMG with experience, you do not know enough medicine to function autonomously and should not moonlight in this capacity.
However, there are plenty of places where you can moonlight as an R2, and you can find this out by talking to various programs.
eg: I did my residency in MI and started moonlighting within my residency program after 18 months, and after two years of residency, got my Michigan medical license and started some independant moonlighting.
Oh, and don't forget the silly 80 hr rule that people so desperately wanted.
Kind of screws moonlighting if you'll go over the limit
** there is no limit on hours worked AFTER you stop being a resident though, so the gray haired 90 yr old attending can work as many hours as he wants, while the 25 yr old is limited
GO FIGURE!
