Genetics --BIG:(

Hi !
I am an IMG, graduated 2 years ago. I just started to study for step 1, with biochemestry ( Kaplan lecture notes and BRS ). And biochemestry starts with genetics. It is awful, it seems that I don;t get anything from what I read. When I studied genetics, I certainly didn;t have to study so in detail! Do we really need to know all those details about the DNA molecules, replications, chemical formulas, enzymes etc ?:shock:
I feel so disappointed with myself and so discouraged...such a great start:confused: .

Don't worry, you are not alone. So many people have similar feeling as you do.
They do test us lots of detail, but you can build up your knowledge because you just started.

Delphi.. don't despair... and don't get frustrated or disappointed... okay..you have read through it once, NOW as you read it through again, break it down... by first starting with the "big picture"... (look at it as if looking through a wide angle lens)... then focus on the details one at a time... break it down... (I make charts) but find your best way of learning... and making simple to learn....

I believe that wcb22 said it best when he was explaining the biochemical pathways... think like it's a beautiful song (story in my case)...

Hey - I saw this and had my life flash before me - I remembered my college genetics prof - a real horror show class -

I have not seen a testers recommend a good review book for it. For many people it is just too low yield. I justed have used what is in the biochemistry book so far.

Since this field is growing - the more recent books are the best - I search the ol' Amazon and found this one. It even has Step 1 type questions in it. Hope it helps.

Genetics is a pretty tough subject. I don't think there are any really good genetic Profs out there. It all get blurry after 46 chomosomes, mRNA,
t-RNA. Also remember it was too much for Gregory Mendel - It is now believed he faked the math of the results he got. From there it goes down hill...

I think it's a good idea to make your own notes especially on things that are tough so that when you are revising, it becomes easy for you. I think the kaplan lecture notes are pretty good atleast so far, compared to my biochem textbooks but if I don't understand something, I go back to my textbooks and read it. And then make a nice note of what I understood. :)
