If anyone is planning to enter UJ for the 1st yr of the 4 yr program in the Fall of 2006, please reply/post here. It would be best to set up a 'generic' e-mail listserv to discuss preparations for Sept as well as to contact fellow students earlier in this summer.
Also, if there are any students in the 4 yr program who wish to advise or serve as mentors, of course in their spare time, please respond to this as well. I/we would love any help in the planning process as well as a contact to address any concerns.

If your application is fully complete then I would send them an email and ask when you can expect to hear from them.

Hi Paraxet,
I just officially learned that I will be going to UJ this Fall. See you in Krakow! Wait, I will probably see you in NJ/Philly b/f then. I think you know who this is! :)
Peace,
Me

Hi istota,
Are you from the US? If so, whereabouts? Would you like to communicate before we all go over there? BTW, Paraxet is my younger brother (hence the funny message above). Do you know of anyone else that is going or already over there? Finally, are you planning to live in the dorms or look for an apartment?

Hey everyone,
I just got accepted, but am not sure yet if I will be going to Krakow (I'm on the waiting list here). I'm Canadian, and just finished my undergrad in physiology.
A question about apartments: does anyone know of a good website where we can browse listings? I have no clue as to the cost of renting a place in Krakow, and if I go I'd probably prefer getting an apartment, instead of living in dorms.
Thanks

Just a bit of info for those of you starting here this september:
If you want to get an apartment then august is the best time to arrange this. Last year, "all" the good apartments were gone by the 2nd week of september according to the gossip of classmates. Most of you will need to use an agency to get an apartment unless you know someone here. Agencies will take care of everything for you but they costs 1 month's rent. This is how most people get apartments. Don't assume an agency is screwing you because they charge this fee :) Additionally you will be required to pay at least 1 month's rent deposit and then the first month's rent up front. This means 3 months rent to move in the first day.
Alternatively there's the dorms. They are a little cheaper than an apartment and will be a good option for many people while they look for an apartment. There is internet (unless it's broken), kitchens, laundry room, and I haven't heard anything really bad about them. Be sure to contact the school office and reserve a dorm room early since they can fill up (especially the single rooms).
Average apartment price seems to be about 1000-1200zl per month not including gas/water/electric. Avoid an apartment with electric heat as the electricity bill in the winter will be at least half your rent.
As far as books, some people like to buy a lot of books and some people (like me) don't buy hardly any. You are not required to have a textbook for any class despite what the syllabi and school office says. At the same time, you are going to be learning almost everything on your own so it's best to get the texts that suits you best.
For anatomy, you can get a copy of the Netter anatomy CD and avoid buying the textbook if you're poor. Most of the other hard classes (histo, physio, biochem) are passable with only the BRS which can even be photocopied here for about 10$.
There will be a meeting before classes with me and some other people and we will answer a lot of your additional questions and make jokes about how hard med school is and how most of you will fail (but remember they're just jokes :))
Make sure you enjoy this summer because from october to march you will be in a steady state of mild panic and moderate stress. And bring a big jacket.

Yes, I'm actually from Chicago. I'd definitely like to acquaint myself with my classmates. I'll be most likely dorming the first year, since I don't feel like haggling for an apartment right before school starts. I don't know anyone beginning in 2006, but I know a few of last year's M1s from undergrad.

The school sent me confirmation emails when they received my documents.
You'll most likely get a reply depending on when you sent in all the paperwork. OK- this reply doesn't help much

Hi thetrixter,
UJ also sent a confirmatory e-mail when they received my stuff. I communicated with them throughout the application process and they were always very good about responding promptly. Never took them more than a day or 2 to get back to me (bear in mind the time difference as well). They say that on average they reply about 2 weeks a/f receiving a completed application (including all the supporting paperwork on that list). I heard back from them w/in a couple of days w/ a decision, but I was in touch w/ them the whole way through.
Try dropping them a line or even giving a call (I understand they are prettty easy to talk to as well). Since the application deadline just passed, I'm sure they are finalizing their decisions if they haven't already. Hopefully, you'll hear something soon. Keep us posted and Good Luck!

OK- one clarification please- once we commit to a dorm room, we can't move out for the entire year- unless we like wasting a huge sum of money. I hope that doesn't sound self-explanatory.
Also, has anything extreme or paranormal occured in the dorms as to your knowledge? I'm just curious since I applied.
Thanks for your input ngoat.

Hi all,
I've stumbled onto this wonderful forum a couple of months ago but have not posted anything since I found great answers to all of my questions here and there. However, I now have a question which has not yet been adressed.
Basically, I am a nice guy from Ottawa, Canada who applied to 4yr prog. at Jag and have recently received notice that I have been placed on a waiting list. I will be calling on monday to try and find out which spot on the list they have placed me in and what are the chances I will come off that list (ie. how many ppl came off the w/l last year or the year before)? In the meantime, I was wondering if any of the current Jag students who visit this forum might have any insights. Do you know/have you ever heard of anyone coming off the w/l? What was their rank? When where they told? Etc.
Maybe neongoat or opuscule might have something to say about this but any info would be great.
Thanx!

Hi Mike,
I thought you might be interested to hear that I am another person who was informed on July 7 that I am on the waiting list at UJ. (I know my application arrived there on June 29.) I admit that I just didn't think the class would fill completely and didn't hustle with the paperwork. I'd greatly prefer to be in Krakow (having taught chemistry at the British school and loving all the theatre productions the city offers), so I am very disappointed.
Please do post what you learn. I'd assume they'd really just do first-come, first-served; I wouldn't expect any more complicated "rankings" for the applicants who have completed the science courses and gotten decent MCATs. And it wouldn't suprise me if they decide to allow a slightly larger class; an increase in 5, for example, would matter really not at all for everything but gross anatomy and, perhaps, histology, yet the extra $50K would matter to their bottom line.
Of course my last paragraph is just pointless speculation.

This is mike again. I called the good folks at UJ and they were very nice and helpful. Turns out this is a first in UJ history, they never had a wl before! So it's impossible to tell what are the odds of getting in. I was told my rank on the wl and that they would contact ppl on the wl if anyone from among the admitted: 1) Did not submit their admission fee, 2) Would notify them they will not be attending in September. I will probably recontact them towards the end of May to see if there has been any movement.
Olga10, i recommend you send them an email and ask about your rank and all. I did not get a chance to ask if they were considering to hike up their class size by a couple of students (ie. 10% bigger class size = 4 more spots). If ever you will contact them, maybe it could be a good idea to discreetly pop that question. Who knows, they told me they had a massive and unexpected rise in applications from last year and it would seem logical that the thought of increasing enrollement might have crossed their mind at one point or another.
In any case, I will be checking out this thread from time to time and watching for developments. Later.

I applied late and was only accepted today, so I guess I'm behind you folks. It'd be great if we could start making arrangements for September. I'm from Toronto, if anyone wants to make contact.
Tanisha- clinicals are in Poland.

Search button is your friend.
You cannot work or do residency in CA or NM. You do most of your clinicals in Krakow but definitely at least 1 in the US.

You can do clinical in N.America, but only electives... (us/canadian school policy more than UJ) unless you happen to know someone who can hook you up. It's just a matter of setting things up and not leaving them till the last minute. So, cores you'll do in Poland; then plan ahead for right after 3rd year to arrange at least 1 elective rotation in the specialty you're interested in, to get that LOR. You can also use your summer clerkships for that purpose and additional LORs.
The US Match application is due ~Sept 1 of your last year. But you don't have to have all (3-4) your LORs in right away. Though, obviously, the faster, the better, and the more desirable you appear as a candidate. This will also depend on what and where you're applying for. Check with the program. Also, if you're going back to Canada, you don't have to have your stuff in til much later, but still in time for the 2nd itteration. Though, this may change depending which way the new CARMS policies go. Assuming, they go anywhere good. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Besides CA & NM, Illinois, NY, and PA are quirky as well. Illinois for example, required you to do all your cores at your home university. Not so much an issue now, but it was in the past. PA, I think, had the same policy. NY doesn't allow you to do more than 12 wks of rotations outside of the country in which your school is located. If there is a particular state you wish to go and practice in, this would be the time to look into their requirements. Having said that, there are recent UJ grads in most of the above mentioned states.

In response to KluverB's last post, is the ~Sept. 1st deadline for the Match program the deadline by which you have to have ALL of your required application materials in...as in step 1, 2 CK, and 2 CS scores? or is it just the deadline for filing the application and you can submit your step 2 scores afterwards? i'm entering the 3rd year of the 4-year program at UJ, and this would make a huge difference when having to take step 2's...meaning it would be necessary to take them at the beginning of the summer, w/o having almost any time to review, if the final deadline is sept 1st. thanks a lot.
