I have just finished my first year of university. I took biology, chemistry, physics, geography and calculus in my first year. I ended up with a 2.13 CGPA (65.6 %) which I know is very very bad..I still have 3 mo. yrs to go..as I'm doing an honours course
The question I need an answer for is..that 'Am i screwd?'..'Is my life over?' ..'Can I ever become a doctor?'
No..I am not giving up hope..I just believe that the med. uni..will not admit me on the basis of my first year..GPA..'Has this GPA ruined me?'

I would start over at another school and never mention that semester again to anyone. I would also take a considerably lighter science load per semester and always, always, always use a tutor. Tutors can often get you from a C to a B or to an A from a B.;)

I quarter/semester will not kill you, but many quarters will. Kick @$# next term and just forget about this quarter. As for not taking such a big science load, don't forget that when your in Med school all you are taking is science classes, so get used to it.

Start over if you want to get into a US or Canadian school...
If you want to go offshore, you need to kick butt in the next three years...
Having said that, if there is no explanation to your poor grade...you need to consider an alternate career...

They tried to do the same thing to me. I can't imagine a worst first year schedule. Normally you take physics after a year of calculus. Having Bio, Chem and physics together. I would go kick the advisor in the head who set up your schedule. That was the year from hell.....NO you are not screwed from medicine - Those are all your basic flunk out courses. Get a better ie easier schedule and concentrate on grades. The real core of pre-med is organic (most of the MCAt test is organic) and bio chem. Don't take them together. I would schedule a few fluff classes and take the two organics with them. Then do the Biochem, and then do the higher level Biologies. I would only take one major killer course per semester. Make sure you have the time to ace it with an A. Your junior year is what they look at the most in medical school. Basic intro courses mean little to admissions. Then do summers to catch up the slack. Also start working MCAT Bio science and Phy science problems in the Barron's review book and not the Kaplan. Kaplan is way to out of sync with the exam. Also you can download old exams from the MCAT site and take them. The MCAT is a test taker exam. The more skill you have taking it the better you do. Just my .02 If all else fails - then do an island school. Also kick you adviser he/she is not your friend.. Better to do less class load and score higher. I had smart friends who took less classes and score higher and got into a US school.

if you know you want to be a doctor and nothing else change your major as soon as you can!!!!!! become a music, economics, poli sci, whatever is the easiest load and get a 4.0 gpa. then take the pre reqs for med school spaced out over 3 years and get straight A's.. the summer before you graduate take a long intense mcat pre course and get a 30 on the mcat. you will then have a great shot at a US school and a guarantee at a top off shore school
the absolute worse thing you can do if you wanna be a doctor is be a 'hard' science major.. those classes are all but useless in med school and admission comt at med schools want high GPA's they don't care about majors. look at programs, i looked at GW, UI, UC, Loyola.. majors included education, poli sci, music, zoology, research, broadcasting..... and i am rotating right now with US med students who majored in computers, history, and art
this is the best advice you will ever get, look up majors of residents and tell your medical 'advisor' were he can stick the schedule he gives you...

At my college there is a process called academic renewal, pretty much they completely wipe off a semester out of your transcript if you apply for this process. See if your school has anything like this, you could say that the counselor failing to heed you a warning about your science load cause you to perform poorly, my friend did this and it saved his life.
If you go to another school and hide your record, you will be lying. Since doctors are expected to have high ethical standards, that would not be a good start. :(
I had miserable grades for my first 3 semesters. I've now been accepted at 2 medical schools.
Work hard to bring up the GPA and ace the MCAT!
