define informed consent.

it is the patient's decision to have or not have medical care done AFTER receiving all information re: the medical care (e.g. medical procedure)

all information refers to the procedure itself, risks, benefits, alternatives, and any other pertinent information; the patient should be able to discuss and/or ask questions re: procedure, and there should be no force to have the procedure by any of the healthcare personnel...

according to the lawyer who taught us medical ethics...

"informed consent" are the two words that can get docs in the most trouble of all. the five words that follow this are "if i had only known." that's what the patient will say if he/she did not get all the pertinent information, and that's what will get our butts in court if we are not careful and thorough. and one way to avoid all this as well...
