Found this on SGU Talk in response to a thread about SGU's e-mail:
SGU student email is currently going through a major change.
All entering students now have forwarding accounts, which means that they use their own outside email accounts to which their SGU email automatically gets sent. We will be doing the same for all student accounts shortly.
In addition, all students will be receiving their own network accounts by the start of the August 2006 term. This will allow the Office of IT to better serve the computer labs and Firefly network.
Announcements regarding these initiatives will be posted on the Members' Center.

Of particular interest, to me anyway, is the part I bolded. I wonder what it will mean. I remember once they were questioning ways to stop the HUGE paper wastage that happens in the library and were contemplating having a page-limit per term with charges for printing above this.
Please note that this was just an idea they were pondering. Don't freak out yet because I never heard anything "concrete" about it other than a mention on the IT site as a "solution" they were thinking of.

So instead of improving the online e-mail interface, they just forward all e-mails? Nice easy way out for them... ;)

They should seriously consider the use of double-sided printers. That will seriously help in the paper waste as some classes almost necessity and/or indirectly encourage printing a lot. First class that comes to mind is Path. Not everyone prints info on their slides but a good chunk of students do print.

Hey, as long as it works it's fine with me. I hate the junk they call SGU webmail. Worst interface ever!
The thing is that that solution won't help with outgoing mail; just incoming. I know that I use my SGU account when communicating with anyone from the school. Admin, profs, etc. I mean. Not classmates.

I agree that it's sometimes a necessary evil to print lots of stuff. So it's a fine line for them to walk. We already pay a lot for our education and many people will not like having to pay to print. The thing is that it annoys the hell out of me to:
1. See people waste paper on usless junk e.g. pages of pictures of jewellery.
2. Actually have something important to print and not be able to because the idiot in front of me is printing useless crap which wastes my time as well as paper (ever have the printer run out of paper on you?) and ink/toner.

You should be allowed to print as much ACADEMIC stuff as needed. That is what we pay those ridiculous adminsitrative fees for; it sure as hell not for the professional service we receive from the administration.
/me gets ready with his new PRE-TEST to print but just the questions.

Fair enough. I agree.
But how to control academic versus garbage? None really.
So, with that in mind, I'd rather they didn't police printing with any charges. Have to deal with some evil for the greater good.
Anyway, this is all speculation. There's been an informal announcement on a forum regarding the e-mail changes but nothing about printing so far. So let's not get into a huff until we have to.
