View Full Version : Where you do residency matters?
A medical student here in the states told me that where you finish your residency does matter. If you finish in just any hospital, and try to get a job at a good University hospital, they would turn you down just because you didn't go to a well known/good hospital for your residency.
What do you guys know about this? Seems logical to me, but haven't really thought about it this way...life comes hard even after residency.

It depends. If you are trying to get a job as teaching faculty at Harvard and you went to a Caribbean medical school and did your residency in FP at Podunk General Hospital in Whatchahoolie, Alabama... then yeah, I'd imagine it would make a difference! And also the same goes for getting into a fellowship. The more prestigious your training, the more competitive you will be for future job opportunities.
Doesn't this seem kinda common sense?

You act like common sense is common....
I think I can remember a time when all of us had this on our walls.

Residency holds a lot more weight than where you went to Med school
residency, and passing your boards(not USMLE, though that is very important, obviously) are the most important factors of a medical career. if you do IM at mass general/harvard, but fail ABIM boards, thats bad. but much worse is if you do it at podunk general and fail also(more likely, as pass rates , i suspect, at podunk are lower)
