Hi. I just finished first term and didn't get on-campus housing through the lottery. However, I ended up finding this amazing house, but the only downfall is that it's off the bus route. (It's near Prickly Bay...Lighthouse Drive) Anyway, I'm getting a car and have been trying to find out as much information as I can.
Has anyone had any problems with any of the rental companies here? Ones I should stay away from? Any you recommend?
Also, I had intended on waiting until I returned in August. Is that a bad idea? Are there waiting lists?
I would appreciate any help/tips you might be able to offer. Thanks. :)

I'd wait until you get back in August. Usually within the first week of next term, they'll find you housing on campus. Now if you are pretty good friends with the housing ladies, they'll bump someone out of their room and put you in there. Ah, how much I DON'T miss the nonsense. Btw, it is a not a lottery that determines the housing.

Long story condensed into two lines:
A truck I had rented for the weekend broke down due to poor maintenance. They forced me to pay for the damage.
be careful with renting...i have heard of a lot of bad experiences

Forget a car - get a mule. Less maintainence. Good for pickin' up local chicks. :-)

it makes more sense to purchase a car and sell it; it comes out to be much cheaper than renting. Believe me you could buy a car for 4,000US and sell it for 3,000US before you leave, see much cheaper. But it depends on what you want. You might just want the convenience of renting, and you might decide that you dont need a car, its just an option to consider.

I heard that this one's (okay, not technically a mule) for sale at a bargain basement price.

There have been a lot of problems with car renting in general so be careful. The good news is that I'd recommend Nedd's. They're reliable and the cars aren't too bad. They'll drop off the car at the airport for you when you arrive and they'll let you leave the car at the airport when you leave. I used them for 2 terms without problems. Highly recommended.
