Hey everyone,

I'm starting school in August as a first termer and I just have a few questions:

1) Shipping

I was just wondering how everyone normally ships their stuff down to Grenada. I mean how do we pack up all of our clothes, bedding, pots and pans, toiletries, laptop, plates, printer, food, school supplies, electronics, etc. Do you try to put everything into like 6 suitcases or box it up or Fed Ex it? Any feedback would be great.

2) Phonecard

I know that I need to get a new cell phone service plan when I arrive but what about our families and friends? I know how expensive it would be every time I call them. Is there a special type of phonecard they can buy or should they just upgrade their cell phone servie to include international calls? I was thinking of buying a webcam for myself and them because I know it's free. . .does anyone use that?

3) Room change every semester

I spoke to Bayshore and they told me that you need to move to a new dorm room after EVERY SEMESTER! Is this true? If it is that means we need to take everything back with us when we come home during breaks.

4) Appliances

What do we get included with the rooms? Microwave? Refrigerator? Also, do people normally have tvs down there or just watch dvds on their laptops? Also, I heard that the rooms have both 110V and 220V outlets. If that's the case, do we not need to worry about buying a converter? If we do need it, can we buy it down there?

Thanks so much to everone that responds. See you all in August!!!

People tend to use Amerijet to ship big items in addition to bringing stuff in there suitcases. There is an Amerijet station near the school to pick up your stuff. Fed Ex I think is expensive vs Amerijet. Pack some necessities in your carry on to last a few days incase luggage falls behind you. I found plates cups actually pretty cheap at the hardware store in Spiceland.

2) Phonecard

They have deals for you when you get there on prepaid phones. Not sure on your other question though. I guess they can find cheaper calling card deals vs adding it to there cell phone service.

Web cam um if you get a network signal in your room it may work. Other then that most wirless areas are in public areas.

3) Room change every semester

Yes, there is storage on campus to keep your stuff.

4) Appliances

What do we get included with the rooms? Microwave? Refrigerator? Also, do people normally have tvs down there or just watch dvds on their laptops? I saw 110Vs in the rooms. Just need a strip surge protector for room and a portable one for taking your laptop to other places on campus. Convertor will just give you more options to where to plug in.

Yes on Micro and Refrig. No tv'sd in rooms but two on campus (student center). Um I saw most people use laptop as there entertainment center.

When I saw the rooms they were even smaller then I imagined.

But I am just like you coming in Aug and this is what I have learned. I am sure other seasoned SGUer's will add there advice. Hope this helps

1. you dont really need have a printer. i would just buy the toiletries in gnd, unless you are really picky on what brand you use, but most of the popular brands can be found at spiceland. if you do ship, go with either fedex or amrijet. if you use amerijet, note that you will have to go to their office to pick up ur stuff. fedex can actually ur stuff on to campus

2. most ppl use skype or other internet telephony . or like you said, change the call plan to include international, or just buy a phone card for ur parents

3. yes. on campus housing is only gurantee for 1st term, after that its by a lottery system. and you could lug everything back every term if u wanna, but there are storage places on campus.

4. you get a microwave, full size fridge, 2 electrice stovetops. yes the sd rooms comes with both so u dont need a converter, and yes you can get it here if u need it. and no there isnt a tv in rooms, only 2 tvs on campus both located at student center. most ppl use laptop as study, communication and entertainment center. it is ur lifeline.
