I am coming in Sept. and am trying to figure out the best option for health insurance. I am from Texas and will be bringing my spouse. The insurance suggested through the school is reasonable for me but for my spouse its outrageous. Any thoughts or Ideas?

Thanks,

I am wondering about this myself.

This one of the more important questions I have seen on the board. Any suggestions from those already on Saba?

A related question how is the overall health care on the island?

A remember a post from awhile back where students were patching themselves up because of a lack of doctors on island.

Anythoughts?

thanks

I have a catastrophic policy that covers me in the States, and evacuation insurance to get there.

Blue Cross (in the States) and MedJet Assist.

A couple of things to watch out for when buying evacuation insurance: Make certain it allows YOU to pick the hospital you are transported to. For example, some plans would say that if you're hurt in (say) Burkina Faso, a suitable hospital might be in (say) Sudan.

Also, the per-instance evacuation costs can really add up. Some low-end plans limit the covered costs to around $10K, when in reality the costs can approach $100K (and sometimes, exceed them).

The university requires US students to have US insurance, correct? I have a plan in the US that I am keeping. I thought I saw a MedJet Assist pamplet or something like that in the package the school sent me. Should I be applying for this now?

Thanks again for the answers!!!!!!!!

Thats a question I can't answer for you. Medjet assist is good (I've had coworkers that had to use their services) but expensive.

The school will provide evacuation insurance ... to Sint Maarten. After that, you're on your own.

Okay. Thanks for all your help. You are a very insightful person. I have begun looking into and to be honest would rather feel secure that I can get to the states in the event of an accident/inncident. My husband was in a near fatal crash in Trinidad and I wish that we could have MedEvac'd him!
